No one's mentioned George Harrison? Was anyone else playing chord inversions in 1964 rock? I don't think anyone even knew what they were. And he's got some of the tastiest leads ever.

Townsend used many chord inversions in his leads at the time.
You are right though. I am not much of a beatles fan but the more I listen to George the more respect I have for him.

Not underrated but mostly overlooked is the dearly departed Clarence White.

LOL! I was gonna say it was me, and the reason being that I only play Barre chords, which means until I get to learning some other chordings, it's doubtful that I'll ever become a highly rated guitarist. But, that makes it also possible for me to become an over-rated guitarist, assuming I could manage to bit big on the strength of Barre chord guitaring along. :p

Wow, there are so many guitarists mentioned in this thread i have never even heard of.

What about tim wheeler from irish band Ash. dunno if you know them in america and anywhere else. when they started out he wasnt that good but over the years he has improved greatly!

Dave Murry from Iron Maiden is always hidden in the shadow of Adrien Smith. The are a lot of european metal guitar players that are just phenominal but are generally unnoticed in the States. All the musicians from Godsmack (well except for Sully) are really a lot better than the music they play.

Kirk from Metallica gets all the lead credit, but I'd say James is both a better lead and rhythm guitar player. Most of Hammets are almost all just a bunch of random notes played really fast.

Just my thoughts though.

Don Rich... of Buck Owens
Pete Anderson... of Dwight Yoakam

OOOH. and I second the Vito Bratta post.. Yes.

Prince is an amazing guitarist. I saw him in concert last year and be blew me away. I also agree that Buckingham is also amazing. McGuinn as always been a favorite of mine on twelve string.

He is not as well known becuase he does mostly Christian music, but Phil Keaggy is great. Especially when you begin to consider he is missing a finger - I think right hand, so it only affected his fingerstyle technique (certainly not enough to slow him doen any).
There are quite a few Christian musicians whom go unrecognized, Especially lead guitarist...Phil resembles Mcartney and sounds a lot like him. I read somewhere that Paul was so impressed he met with Keaggy. I'll bet they Jammed! :D The lead guitarist in Phillips,Craig, and Dean kicks too. Another is on the Todd Agnew CD *Grace like Rain*. The song "Grace like rain" (which is an awesome song!!!). Two guitarist play lead...Steve Selvidge and Justin Rimer...You should take a listen, along with Drums, bass, Vocals, violin, and cello this song rocks...

Have Lennu Breau or Gary Lucas been mentioned yet?

Saw The Magic Band the other night and Gary Lucas kicked some serious ass!

Defintily second the frusciante one. stone gossard is also a hugely underated guitar player
