Underrated guitarists

Again, Duane Denison from the Jesus Lizard.

Tone, taste, and complete originality. You can hear his influences, but you'll hear nobody like him. The guy seriously saved my interest in guitar players back in the early 90's.

Duane Denison rules. Ever hear any of his playing with Hank Williams III? Its the weirdest country playing I've ever heard. It goes to show his unique approach to the instrument... I don't think Brian Setzer gets enough respect.

Actually, no, I haven't heard any of his Hank 3 stuff. There's some damn good Tomahawk stuff, but it doesn't touch what he did in the Jesus Lizard. And I second your Setzer notion. Especially the straight up rockabilly stuff, I'm not a fan of the swing stuff.

Wasn't that Steve Morse?

They both did. Steve Howe and laster Steve Morse. Steve Morse would have probably gone on to a 6th 'title,' but pulled a 'Dustin Hoffman at the Academy Awards' and refused to be included in the running the following year.

Winning Wimbledon 5 years straight - now that's showbusiness.

Was that the year Eddie Van Halen was voted best keyboardist?

Sorry...couldn't resist- it's late :)

How about....

Steve Jones .... I'll bet if Sid was still alive, him and Victor Wooten would have made a CD together...lol. Better than Billy Sheeman.

I would have said Ty Tabor, but since he's been mentioned many times, I'll go with Liz Phair, its easy to brush her off now as fluff pop, but listen to the old demos, she had a vibe, and does some funky stuff that few could pull off.

underrated:

Scott "Wino" Weinreich (The Obsessed, St. Vitus, etc.)
Duane Denison (the Jesus Lizard)
Chris Haskett (ex-Rollins Band)
King Buzzo (Melvins)
Dean Ween (Ween)
Greg Ginn (Black Flag) - worst and best guitarist ever

its about ideas and feeling, not chops

James Hetfield is amazing.

Hammett - one of my favorite lead players - but I hate it when he uses a Floyd Rose live - always out of tune. I hate those guitars.

Pete Anderson is killer

Paul Simon

Ray Pihri

Vincent Nguini

Dwight Yoakam

Steve Earle

Yeah Im going to agree with the guy on the first page, Johnny Greenwood is amazing... not necessarily insanely fast or anything, just unique and good!

2 of my other favorites are:

1. Matt Bellamy (MUSE)- I think him and Johnny Greenwood are in the same class, not the most amazing ever but they have some really unique sounds, and they know how to use effects to make their playing better, unlinke many guitarists out there...

2. Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge)- He is a really good songwriter, and I really like alot of his riffs and solos.

And since some people are talking about bassists, might as well throw in 2 of my picks on them...

1. Chris Wolstenholme (MUSE)- Uses some great effects like a bunch of big muffs linked together... to hear that listen to Muse- Hysteria. This guy knows how to hold a song together, and thats exactly what Muse needs... with Matt fiddling with all his effects... Also, he can play some really great things that Ive seen live, but they dont fit it in their albums because they dont mix well... For some finger tapping bass, check out Muse- Butterflies and Hurricanes.

2. Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine)- Of course he doesnt show off alot of skill, he has Tom Morello in the band! Tom likes minimalistic stuff, and his whammy pedal.. But Tim is a great bassist, with awesome tone (thanks to his home made pedals and pickups).
