Underrated guitarists

Bill Nelson from BeBop Deluxe is one of my favs. The first album called Axe Victim ('73?) and 1975's Sunburst Finish are great. There is a strong Hendrix effects influence but the guitar tone is clear and spot on. I strongly recommend these two albums to complete a 70's classic rock collection. Best of all the guitar is actually forward in the mix!

I'm going with my two favs. Criss Oliva(Savatage) and James Murphy(Testement)

Mark Ribot

Yeah - love his work with Tom Waits.
Saw him do a solo set in Bristol last winter and then one with Adrian Utley of Portishead (another under-rated and little mentioned guitarist).

Realy really great!

Vince Gill
Brad Paisley
Merle Haggard
Waylon Jennings
Fenderville!

I would have to say that alot of country/bluegrass guitarist go under-rated. I have seen some of the most amazing licks pulled off at breck-neck speed and these guys don't even break a sweat doing it.

Don Ross (seriously folks.. look this guy up)
Lenny Breau

I will think of more later.

I'll have to say

Rivers Cuomo (Weezer)
Johnny Greenwood (radiohead)
Ken Andrews (Failure/Year of the rabbit)

under rated guitarists

Mike Campbell of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers... very tastey notes
Lowell George (Little Feat)... very best slide player ever
George Harrison... short and sweet lead breaks... but amazing use of notes

For sure birdie... Don Ross is probably the most amazing finger picker you'll ever hear...completely self taught... love his use of alternate tunings...

Greg Koch in Milwaukee is a good player... all out electric.... speedy and tasteful... better than many of the big guys

Greetings,

While I haven't read the entire thread, the two I didn't see mentioned;

Rick Derringer
Joe Walsh

I'm just sayin'

Mark Knopfler

I don't know if he's really underrated, but I can guarantee that there are few aspiring guitarists that list him as an influence. I honestly think he underrates himself, due to an article I read where he quoted himself as not being really all that great, and that he probably needed to practice more. Got to love a humble genius.

How do you know Greg Koch? I'm just curious because the only way I know him is that I write and edit books for Hal Leonard and I've worked on a book or two of his.

Jerry Dragon, that guy really kicks ass when he gets going.
Oops, that me :D

I'd like to hear some shit from this guy. There's a bunch of people on this board that kick some ass, both in lead, and especially rythum. Show me some way cool riffs, and you kick more ass than a good lead player. A rythum that gets you hooked right off the bat, nothing is better. Underrated....Iommi, Jerry Cantrell, or Pepper Keenan. Cool songs. Cool playing. And I'll say, after hearing the dudes play in the Rumble threads, most of those guys are awesome. Just not known to anyone except people on this board. And dragonworks, put your shit back up. I wanna hear it. I love homebrew, and even like homerecorded music. :D

Gone Glimmering

Matt Sweeney of Chavez! It doesn't have to be tiddly-widdly to rock.

When I think of underrated guitarists, one comes immediately to mind:

ANDY LAROCQUE

His work in King Diamond is utterly brilliant. Some of the most emotive soloing and deadly riffs on the planet.

I've heard a few of his CD's from a bass player friend that worked in a studio in Milwaukee. He does most of the bass for my recordings. I'd never heard of GK until just a couple of years ago.... but just the fact that I don't see his name credited on more recordings, tells me that he makes the list of underrated guitar players. :)

Joey Santiago of the pixies, and my guitar teacher, Dave Weins.
