Underrated guitarists

Some one whose name almost never comes up on these lists--Roger Hodgeson(sp?) --the guitarist and high vocals for Supertramp in their hey day. His solos are usually underneath the vocals and strings so they are often not heard at quiet levels. But they are fantastic, toneful and tasteful.

Underrated by whom?Musicians know who these guys are.Seriously.So being rated by ones peers doesnt make for much underratedness.....Unnoticed by the general public? At least till they see em live and in person...Whats that worth?

Dan Huff also had a band called Giant. He was quite the shredder before he became the country guitar god.

One of 'the guys in Thin Lizzy' was Garry Moore.....dont think he's too underrated.

I know a few guys who if I mentioned their names you would all go...'Hmmmm, never heard of em...'They're all as good as the likes of Lukather and such, they just chose another path.

Someone mentioned that a lot of the names given wouldnt be known by the younger guitarists.Probably true. So, would Mr. Jimi be underrated by todays generation? How about Duane?Any of you youngsters listen to that stuff? You should so we could get Rock music back on a creative track.

How about Toy Caldwell?James Taylor can REALLY fingerpick.Robbie Robertson? The Reverend?Someone you should all hear regularly....Freddie King.

luther dickenson

north mississippi allstars

right up there with duane allman with slide guitar

Well, I definently belive Robby Krieger (The Doors) is underrated. I have personally rarely seen him mentioned for great guitarists. This guy used tons of inversions and voicings to create some really jazzy/rockish chord melody licks. In my mind, he is the perfect mixture of Joe Pass and Jimmi Hendrix.

My two cents anyway.

This might create a laugh or two.... I always thought Lindsey Buckingham was amazing. He doesnt use a pick most times and is very inovative...

Not laughing at all, Lindsey Buckingham is great, big influence. (And under the influence to boot..)

My 2 cents:
Brian Futter - Catherine Wheel
Grant Lee Phillips - Grant Lee Buffalo

I never saw these guys get the massive props...

Sonic youth guy...forget his name.....he is the king of alternate tunings

Freddie King???? Underrated???? WTF??? He's one of the "three kings" that has been given nods by everyone from Hendrix to Clapton to Stevie Ray.

Creativity > Virtuosity

amen. couldn't have said it better. also to add, creativity is great, but being able to make something creative sound right with a song, even better. For example, i can listen to the Mars Volta and be impressed, but they are fairly boring in my opinion. Overly creative, but boring songs.

John Reznik seems to have both down perfectly.

josh homme...getting better every album.
Paul Leary...I wonder how good he would be if he played straight forward stuff instead of...???

Prince may actually be overrated as a lead player (often compared to Jimi), but his rhythm playing is incredible.

Eddie Hazel from Funkadelic--Maggot Brain is his classic

Robben Ford--musicians know him, but not the public.

Alex Chilton

Kurt Cobain doesn't get much credit for his unique style of playing.

The dude from Kid Rock is pretty good i dont even know his name. That is bad cause he rocks

Hmm...

Dean DeLeo - STP
Jonny Greenwood - Radiohead
Billy Corgan - Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan
Robin Trower

Bill Haley

dont lough at me .... Danny Cedrone

Bill Haleys first guitarist ... (he died fracturing his scull walking (slipping) on an icy street)

just listen at that friggn solo in "rock around the clock" ... I doubt there are many of the self proclaimed shredder-kings that could play it as clean as Danny - let alone make up this solo 50 yrs ago...

cheers
alfred

My uncle was a Haley's Comet. I think Bill passed away in '82, but they still toured and used the name even as late as '88 when Jim came off the road. I think he spent a little over a year with them.
