For sure birdie... Don Ross is probably the most amazing finger picker you'll ever hear...completely self taught... love his use of alternate tunings...

Greg Koch in Milwaukee is a good player... all out electric.... speedy and tasteful... better than many of the big guys

How about a whole festival featuring under rated guitar players. This is being held just outside of my hometown (Kingston, Ontario).

Ricky Skaggs
Ry Cooder--he was doing stuff with alternative tunings 35 years ago.
John Fahey

loved by musicians but unknown by music fans..

Ty Tabor of King's X

Totally agree.
Ty is amazing.
Far better than most rock guitarists in today's music.
It's really too bad that more people don't recognize his talent.

underrated guitarist

Allan Holdsworth plays for peanuts and would burn any living human a new ass....................PERIOD

Sneako

Ty Tabor...great call. A total original.

Adam Franklin - Swervedriver (best and most overlooked guitar heavy band.....ever)

Josh Homme...

Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss

...people talk about Kyuss but no one, even the guitar magazines have paid due props to the guy who has defined a whole movement then walked away from it. His fine ear for tone far surpasses most of the missed guitarists listed here.

Oh yeah, Buzz Osbourne from the Melvins has some remarkable rythm timing that takes his chops to a whole new level. He gets props for being weird and unpredictable but no one looks any deeper.

Kyuss kicks some serious ass.....

definetly Jimmy D. Lane...........his blues blow me away

and also Steve Howe from Yes........... his lines are so freakin inovative and especially for his time

well I wish I could also put in underrated bassists being a bassist myself........ but I suppose that is for a different thread

Andy Powell, Ted Turner and Laurie Wisefield. Three awesome guitarists who have never gotten their due.

David Rawlings (solo on "I Dream A Highway"), Lindsey Buckingham (Check out "Big Love"), John Mayer (everyfreaking thing he plays --he's a monster on the fretboard).

Too true. Far overlooked. At least Vai reckognizes him enough to put him on Favoured Nations.

I'll have to add Jeff Beck. People say how good he is but I don't think people realize how good he really is. The man is quite a genius and has never really gotten any reckognition beyond some passing lip service.

Strongly Agreed.

I hate John Mayer, but he's got a good handle on his guitar.

Also, the Edge anybody?

Johnny Greenwood crouches on stage and twiddles parameters on his chocbox of effects, and plays some way weird lines that whiff of fromage a lot of the time.

Edge is a good contender for an opposite poll.

John Mayer: way ahead of his tender years, writes quality songs that don't require him to prove that he could and would royally piss all over the above two in 10 seconds with a six string in his hands.

Whoah, way too much coffee!

wow. arnt you the one who also said chris squire is an underrated bassist? well guess what! Steve howe is not an underrated guitarist!!! He's one of my favorite guitarists, but he is definitely not underrated. He gets his deserved amount of respect.

One guitarist i think is underrated is Martine Barre of Jethro Tull. I might be making the same mistake as the guy i made fun of here, but i havnt heard of much appreciation of this guy, though i wouldnt be surprised if he actually was widely respected and i just didnt know about it yet, since he is from a fairly well known band.

Steve Howe= 5 times "Best Overall Guitarist" in Guitar Player magazine.... More than anyone else in GP history.... I'd call that "respect". :D
