What Is Up With You People And The Conga Slide ?!!
It's killing me. Here I am, listening to a pretty decent mix, kinda groovin' to it, then suddenly, out of nowhere, I get smacked upside the head with the conga slide.
It's not supposed to be a Conga Slide Solo !!
I had the feeling that this Conga Slide part was meant to be a special effect, so I treated it as such and processed it quite a bit.Raw-Tracks said:What Is Up With You People And The Conga Slide ?!!

What do you consider an edit ? Doubling a part ? Offseting it ? Adding a delay or reverb ?

I am in no wise attempting to be difficult or hard nosed.
The goal here was to provide peopla something to MIX, not produce.
when you remove parts from a mix that is producing the song. The song has been produced. Plenty of people have Production opinions. That is great. Those are the things you submit in secret, but for this contest it was apples to apples. Every one has the same 29 tracks to mix so MIX it dont produce it.
The goal is to feel placement/use of effects and verbs. I dont consider that production. If you had chosen to 1/4 note delay the lead vocal all the way through the mix that would not have been considered producing but to delete a Horn part is production.
bentRabbit read exactly what i said and meant about hw to apporach the mix.
You have a mixing console and outboard gear. Go forth.
You were not to alter the perofrmance in any way, but rather enhance it. Yes that could be up for interpretation but read Bent rabbits comment and I thought it was pretty clear.
The only 2 people that got disqualified were becaue they Deleted portions of the song. A fade is no big deal. But they had parts missing from my song.
The next contest is one to have at it. Produce your but away have fun with it. But there will be a basic guidleine. This song was to remain unedited. I am sorry if that appears to be harsh but that is the real world.
Mixers get fired for producing. Only when the artist says do what you gotta do, do you change their arrangement.
Imagine if when I was out with Usher I did what i wanted to do and removed half the percussion from his mix. I am sure I would have heard from Johnetta and gotten cussed out. you learn to give them what they want and if you have an opinion.... you ask 1st.
Now on with the show.
I will have results up by 12pm EST. I am still going over some of the mixes.
For the 2 that were disqualified I can judge your entires based on the criteria set forth in spite of the edits.
If you guys remember PMC 1 and PMC 2 the rules changed becasue people added so many parts it made the contests unfair. Here is joe blow with original tracks and here is John Doe with percussion added, new bass line, etc... Not Apples to apples.
hence BB came up with a cirteria to eliminate those things from altering the judging.
Thanks a bunch.
Plus, no one edited Heaven, just this song.......SO why the fuss and confusion all of a sudden......

Agreed, but I believe there is a certain element of production that is inherent in the mixing process. The goal here was to provide peopla something to MIX, not produce.
I disagree, where to use delay and what type of delay (or reverb, or flange, or whatever) is as much a part of the production process as where to put the triangle part, or horn stabs. The goal is to feel placement/use of effects and verbs. I dont consider that production.
Mmmm, maybe a mixer has been fired for producing, but generally speaking, most artists and producers are open to suggestions and interpretations from the mixer. Sure, the mixer may be asked to undo it, if the producer or the artist do not like it. But they are not going to be fired point blank. If the mixer is continually doing things they don't like, he may get let go as well, but that is because the mixer just isn't right for the project. It isn't because he muted to the triangle part for a few bars.Mixers get fired for producing. Only when the artist says do what you gotta do, do you change their arrangement.
