Yeah, we could all beat ourselves up here, but when it comes right down to it, there's only one thing that matters, and that is that every judge thought my mix was better than Vestast's mix.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH...IN YOUR FUCKING FACE,

LLLLLLEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWZZZZZZZZZZEEEEEEEERRRRRRR

:D

Harris - Just remember that I'm a judge in the new contest ....

BUUURRRRRNNNN !!!!!

:D :D :D

U guys are hilarious. LOL. Now i know why my wife yells down the stairs "Come to Bed!!!!!"

Hmm not bad. This was alot of fun. I think ill put in some more time for Mix Conest 5.

Here's a good example of subjectivity and how it works in our lives. I liked Producerkid's mix a lot better than mine. A LOT, lol. If I were judging his mix against my mix in a contest of 2 mixes, I would finish 3rd, and I FREAKING MIXED MINE THE WAY THAT I LIKED IT!!! :D :D

That might have been my problem with Blue Bear. I mean never mind that I got out mixed. I should have paid for his dinner when we got together with Dough and Mike. :D

Well I did offer to accept bribes, but no one bit! :p

I was looking over the 3 results -- far more similar than dissimilar between the judges, which is good. Points to a more "universal standard" of sonic acceptability.... sound quality of a mix is not as subjective as you might think.

I concur. good sound is good sound. Our particular tastes may factor in a bit but when asked to judge specific criteria.........Good Sound is Good Sound. Period.

Ya in my funny kinda way I was trying to say that you guys made the right choices.

Except with that Chris Harris guy.

Holy shit. I got second overall. Damn.

Heh. Thanks guys. You've made my week.:)

Listening to my mix again. I probably should've cut back on the L2 Ultramaximizer. Just a smidge.

I think it's very important to know what end product the artists are looking for... such as listening to reference cd's of bands they're trying to sound like, and generally discussing things with them. One good example is the keyboards in this song, I was bringing them way up front for more of a symphonic prog rock sound, wheras they were supposed to be a barely audible pad.. The vocals were a mystery too, they weren't intelligible even solo'd, so how to mix them? And those chronically bleeding drum mics - oy! I've never missed samples so much.. :D

Hats Off!

I don't know how you guys do it.

This being my first mix in the box as well as my first mix of something I didn’t record. It kinda sucked compared to most of them. (ok it really sucked)
I've been recording and mixing in the same room for almost five years, so this was fun and great learning experience for me.
I'm gonna have to get in tune with mixing on the computer or just pack it up and take it too the studio.

Hats off too everybody that entered. I've been doing this pro for about ten years and you guys smoked me.

WOW!!!

2nd last again.

Maybe I should throw these new Wharfdales in the trash and get my old HiFi speakers back out.

I'm not sure what it is but it seems to me that the stuff I track and mix myself I get half decent comments on, and when I mix stuff that was tracked by someone else I plain suck at it.

Plenty room for improvement here so that's always a good thing. Tome to grab PMC#5 and see how well I can butcher that one  :D

Thanks again to finster for the song, The Judges for their time and patience and congrats to the winner...great mix

Alec

Yeh Badchi did a great job his mix. Great sounding guitars in space. I made the mistake of too much keyboard, swimming in mud. I sure have a lot to learn on this stuff.

Chris Harris did a good mix too.

And yeh I though producerkid would have scored higher. His mix sounded great to me all tricked up with the cruisomaximator

Only one mix was "in the ballpark" compared to professional, commercial mixes, and that was the winning mix, IMO...

All the others had a variety of sonic issues mostly in terms of depth, imaging and space. A lot also suffered from poor low/high-end balances - some being thin and muddy or shrill, others being bass-heavy and dark. Some were even thin and dark.

I've heard a number of "heavy" clips from client reference CDs -- even the edgy, hard-metal style is sonically well-balanced and has depth around the tracks. This is a characteristic of a professional mix, and it's where most people fail.

Do you happen to remember off the top of your head what lacked in my mix? Do any of the judges for that matter?

Like I said in an earlier post, after listening to it again.. I really think there was a bit too much compression over the whole thing. But other than that.. yea.

If you can, please share. :)

Thanks, judges. Thanks, Fin.

I agree. I spent a couple of hours working on the drums, bass and gits. At that point, I was really diggin' the heavy guitar riff. When it came time to pull up the keys, I just couldn't get them to work. They just seemed to take away from the focus on the fiddles. My first thoughts were not to even put them in the song. I don't feel there's a right or wrong answer, just a matter of taste

LOL. Wow, Chris, thanks man. lol. I just did what my ears told me. I listen to a lot of metal and hard rock and alot of what I hear has a very pushed and (for lack of better words) clustered sound. Metal generaly is kick/snare/bass heavy. This is what provides the "kick you in your ass" quality of the music. The guitars should be punchy, but not overpowering, and the keys were kind of Cradle of Filth reminiscent to me. That's why, in my mix, the keys were a bit more up front. To each his own I suppose, but thanks for the experience and on to numba 5, beehatches! :D

Would you be up to providing as much mix information as possible - for the benefit of helping others improve? Your mix, IMO, was so far ahead of everyone elses.
Which DAW, plugs, eq, etc?

DAW is Cubase. As far as plugins, nothing really special, some compression, a little delay and lots of EQ. I'm no expert but would be happy to answer any questions. There's a wealth of knowledge right here in this forum just read all of Blue Bear's posts.
