i say to make us feel less restless, offer up PMC 12 now!!!

Yeah, anyway! Why do we need to wait for 11 to be done? Can't we start downloading 12 now? It sure would pacify the crowd.

...i've never expected that i would win, or even come in the top 10......but i definitely want feedback on what/how i'm doing. i know my mixes have some issues...

Hmmm, that gives me an idea.

Wouldn't it be cool if we had a full time mp3 forum that worked like these contests?

Instead of other members simply making random (and sometimes ineffective) comments about our mixes, one of a handful of experienced judges could subject it to the now famous BB scoring system. It could be sort of like a never ending mix contest. Anyone could download their choice of a few offered songs, take as long as they need to mix it, and then post it for scoring any day of the week. Later when any one of those volunteer judges has time, he or she could score it up and post the results. It would be non-competitive. We could use it as a learning tool to see where we need the most improvements. The scoring results could even be kept private if the mixer wishes.

It would reduce the workload on the judges because they would only have to score one song every once-in-a-while when they have the time. It would also make the rookies feel less intimidated by the competitive nature of the contest.

We could still have the contests too, same as always.

Oh well, Just thinking out loud.

while i like the idea on the surface, i think in practice (much like communism :D), it would buckle under its own weight. that's a lot of demand to place on a "set panel of judges", you know what i mean?

i think it might be a better idea for people who "review" other folks' mp3s in the clinic to approach them with the BB formula/system in mind.

i mean, when i listen to someone else's songs i always listen with several things in mind. first is "does the song suck?" :p seriously, i see if the song hits me on some emotional level and how i react to it. second is the balance of the instruments and whether anything is sticking out or has other obvious issues. then i listen for Hi and Low Freq problems, tones, etc. it's not as thorough as the "BB System", but it points me in the right direction. and i try to take all of these things into account before i comment. of course, given that i rarely listen to other folks' mixes on my monitors, that means i rarely comment.

at least.....this is what i do with my own mixes before i consider them "done".

cheers,
wade

That is what I have been trying to do with www.Raw-Tracks.com. My site actually "inspired" Finster to do these contests. I don't run my site as a contest though.

timboZ ;)

Of course we are going to wait for the mr. to return. Waiting a bit more won't hurt anyone. :)

Also I would like to get those BB results too. Allthou I know pretty well where I screwed up :p (mainly the too thin OHs and cymbal leakage in toms..zzz.. was I deaf when mixing or something? hahah :D ).

So, you do that sort of thing? Cool, I'll have to start hanging out there. I could use the practice.

Thanks!

I charge a small fee for my tracks. But, if you guys are interested, and would submit mixes to my site, I'll offer my volume4 tracks to the first 10 people to email me (EMAIL), just say you're from HR. I normally charge $5 per download or $8 per mailed CD. I gotta pay for bandwidth and studio time somehow. The tracks are high quality, recorded in a pro studio by me. Here's the studio I record the tracks at:
www.SmartGeeks.com

If you want the free tracks, all I ask is that you hit my "google ads" a couple of times when you are at my site, that way, I'll still get a few advertising pennies.

Never mind... it is.... (helps to look before asking!!)

Yup, that's Butch Vig's studio. It's a great place, lots of history. Smart Studios and Raw-Tracks.com are not affiliated in any way, other than I pay them money and they let me record there. I'm just a client.

They have a great Trident A-Range console that I used to work on when I worked at Quad Studios in Nashville. Now I get to work on it in Madison, WI!

I just sent you the download link. There's a few left for anyone else who wants in.

Thanks Eric... I looked over your Raw-Tracks site.... (and clicked on all the ads for you!!). ;)

I really like the samples.... WELL WORTH $5!!! I like every tune, but the Ska one... not my style really...

I think I'll pay the $5, and download the 24 bit versions....

PLUS.... you can get great critiques and conversation in your forums.

PS- I am not associated w/ Eric or Raw-Tracks in any way... really....

Thanks again! That's a great site, and perfect for anyone who likes to try their hand at mixing.

Also, this month's Recording Magazine features nothing but Mixing.... timely... :D

Yeah, the ska one's acually really old. I threw that up to get a little more variety, it was not recorded at Smart like the rest of them.

Also, please note, the only project that's available in 24bit right now is Volume 4, the one I jsut sent you a link for. All the rest are only 16bit and MP3 format (for those on dial-up). All future releases will be available in 24bit.

Indeed it was my inspiration.
Its a great little program he's got going over there.
And good quality tracks too.

And just for the record...Butch Vig is the man.

Madison, WI?
That isn't where those new Madison speakers come from, is it?.......Ah, nevermind, probably not.
