a home recording studio suited specifically for rap

When I first started me it was me and a partna both wearing headphones. Then it was the closet in ab room. Next up was a crackhead built iso booth. Finally bumped into a cat that has a studio in a converted garage. He has layered up sheetrock, doubled doors, and a second booth way towards the back for extreme needs.

Headphones and the right typa mic being the cheapest route... Building a iso booth with doubled up sheetrock, doubled up vaccum sealed glass windows, and a truck load of Aurlex soundproofing materials being the most expensive.

I think the SM58's are the most popular mics when it comes to recording in a noisy enviroment. Cop that and some big ole ear covering headphones and get as far away from the source of the noises as you can. Have the mic facing you and you should be facing the noise. That way the mic gets more vocals than noise.

You can also try a closet. Probably will make things sound boxy but better than noisy maybe. Carpet on the walls can slightly kill some of the box sound.

Since you want to do rap, you would be well advised to get the Pro tools digi 002. this is about 2k. You will then need a good computer, about 1k and a Triton le about 1.5k. I know this is a bit over budget but in my opinion, a rap guy couldn't possible have a better starting setup and, the advantage is you will be getting started learning pro tools, the industry standard especially in rap. Then, after a fasion, you might want to add an MPC so you can so some sampling and have a great instrument for progamming beats though nowadays, there are other options. Still, the MPC is a fine way to make beats.

This is the way to go, I am sure of it.

the mpc-2000xl and sp-1200 are the 5th element of hip-hop...

no doubt...

throw in a nice keyboard, some software, and determination...and then you could be onto sumthing

Sorry to Jump in on all this, but I was reading through this post one day here in Saudi Arabia (Im in the Air Force, and currently here supporting operation Iraqi Freedom...75Billion that THATS the name they give it...woohoo), anyway, I have a question.

If I get a USB Card for my PowerMac laptop and hook in a midi controller to it (like MidiMan or Ox 8) that will let me play the beats in fruityloops when I want...right? Like instead of click click click or arranging those damn notes in the open keyboard portion..I can just kind of lay down a bass line and work around it?

Just wondering...this is going to be my portable studio (make that my only studio) since I go TDY (temp duty), so much it would be nice to have something to cart with me.

Also, if you guys have any other suggestions for a portable studio, drop a line.

System: PowerBook "Wallstreet" 233MHZ, 128MB ram, 4G HD. SCSI, USB (PCMCIA CARD), Firewire (PCMCIA Card), Serial...blah blah the usual ports..

Budget (since everyone asks): about $200 to start with and $500 in a month or so.

Sorry that this is my first post and I didn't take time to introduce myself, but I gotta get running to work and I wanted to get this message out. Peace.

You running real low with that 233mhz and only 2 bones... I have to suggest that you learn the hell out of Fruity as is and save up some bread for a better setup if you can stay patient. UNLESS... It's simply the USB midi controller to play some simple notes and nothing else...

Right now you just wanna do beats right? When you say portable studio that opens you up to some shit... That could include recording vocals and all so I just wanna help you focus your goals a little. .. Strictly beats right? If your boys start wanting to drop rhymes you'll be looking at more cheese and more connections and some different options.

You talking about USB cardbus card right? If so you might wanna think 2.0 cuz 1.0 is bullshit for any type of audio/midi work. I think it's only a couple 10 spots more and still will work with 1.0 shit.

Damn.... 30 minutes just passed...

Some editing.... I had to drop this shit in after this post... I doubt the shit I talk under this will be USB POWERED for portabilty---->

While I was b.s.ing i remembered something playboy... A new M AUDIO joint with a MIDI CONTROLLER and AUDIO interface with mic preamps. This shit a USB 2.0 card and a nice mic might be a cool deal for a cat running and gunning... If you are looking for the whole thing that is... I don't know shit about it but it looks like something for a cat in your situation... Called the OZONE in the Musicians Friend catatlog... Shit might be able to take you into some audio recording with your setup... Probably not much with that computer but it migh handle a few mono verses without much hassle or harddrive. Maybe ask in the computer/software area of this BBS...

Some shit to look at for your 5.... 329 midi/audio inter face, maybe 60 or 70 for USB 2.0, and a bill on the mic and cable... If you got the software...

Don't just take my word though cuz i'm just shooting shit... Some guys around here can help you make some good informed buys if you stay patient.
