DEJA you gotta a whole lotta options with $3000.

But...Nobody can tell you if you are gonna like hardware or software better or what hardware or software you are gonna like better. That's more about knowing yourself. You can give us some clues as to your prefences and we can use what we know to help guide you to better/best options.

Ask a specific question about a specific item of interest and I can break it down for.

Hardware if you like to have it right in front of you. On your lap. Crouched over the gear. Under your figertips. If you like turning knobs and pushing buttons. You wanna hit something? You wanna feel it? Throw it againt the wall and it's still alright... Little screens. Hidden tricks. See Jane run.

Software is tweak fest. Options out the ass with the click of a mouse button. Drag and drop ease. Get it from the web. Open this file in that file. Convert it. Undo it. Save it. Delete it. Look at the pretty colors. Dig deeper. I can do that? Then I can do this. See Jane walk.

Jane still got where she wanted to go.

Feel me now see me later.:D

making a comment stating that your iq is 218, therefore you would be able to figure anything is irrelevent and removes any doubt from my mind that your iq is infact 218.
But aside from that observation, i'd recomend a computer with some softwear, coupled with the manditory hardware, such as a good sound card, preamps, mics, etc...
maybe keyboard or whatever you like. You need to look into it to figure out what you want.

neways

dont know why this ambi is so obsessive over how smart i am. I CAN FIGURE IT OUT GEEZ TRUST ME. but im kinda busy in college in my computer programming classes so i figured i'd take the easy route and ask some questions, which i am thankful yall all are answering. not mad ambi but lets just get off that, k? :)

I didn't realize mentioning it once was obessive, but yes i agree. Enough about that.

oh yea

when im recordin vocals and stuff um, what would i need to do to cut out all background noise and interference, tell me from most expensive to least expensive, heck i dunno let me guess, should i make a small soundproof room outa plexiglass? ha well sumbody help thankz

They got prefab iso booths you can buy starting at around $1200. You can find em on the web or in the back of recording magazines. You can go to the studio building area of this board and find out how to build you own. You could do like me and get a crackhead to build it. Or you can try and convert your closet into a booth (did that when i was in school). You could buy/build some kinda sound sheild to put between you and your speakers. Or you could just say fuck it and put a mic up as far away from you speakers (or use headphones) and just record.

Are you just thinking out loud?

Peace.

Would you kindly name one person in this forum that "just loads up fruity loops, and plays a bunch of the built in sounds and calls it their new 'track'"

Please name names, because from what I've heard nobody in this forum has ever done that(I would know because often use fruity, but not in the manner you described).

Would you be willing to let us hear some of your "music"?

Please!!!..........enlighten us all with your creative genius!!!!!:D :D :D

as a fellow smarty who is now a software architect (independent contractor for IBM) and teaches comp sci part-time at the local university for fun, i'll second DeJaBu's claim that he'll figure out the technical perspectives of the tools.

DeJaBu, i suggest that you go software, that way your desktop or laptop (if you want to go firewire or usb) can double for software development. maybe over the summer you can download the directx development kit and make us some cool, freeware plug-ins. doing that coiuld get you a cool internship somewhere so you won't be worthless to your development manager when you first come out of college.

some universities are now providing laptops for students. does yours? mine does. but the students have to turn them in at the end of the school year.

laptop $1500
don't go top of the line (there's no need to). better to get a slightly slower processor with all of the trimmings (usb2.0, firewire, 10/100 and a large hard drive with 512mb RAM).

tascam us-428 $500
USB recorder/mixer. only drawback is that the pre-amp doesn't have phantom power, but you can take it wherever you go, and its got midi connection so you can connect the sound modules of your collegiate clientele.

rolls PB-23 $50
this will give your US-428 preamps the phantom power it needs for the AT-4033 listed below. DO NOT SKIMP on the MICROPHONE.

audio technica 4033 $300
this is a quality microphone very well suited for vocals and can take the rah-rah of gritty hip-hop vocalist if you position it correctly.

Roland JV-1080 (ebay) $250
i'd get the 1080 because you can get expansion cards for it as your needs grow. otherwise, go with fruity loops, gigasampler, or DXi software instead. I don't because I like to layer sounds and I find that using outboard midi gear is much better for this purpose.

USB/Midi keyboard controller (ebay) $50
you can find one of these from damn near every keyboard maker on the planet. get it used from someone on ebay.

Cakewalk Sonar recording software $300
sonar is my fav recording/sequencing software.

Sonitus Ultrafunk DirectX effects $300

TOTAL $3250
this was the best I could do and still feel like you would have the tools necessary to create some good stuff. Now of course having tools and an IQ doesn't give you any creative ability whatsoever.

since you said around $3000, i didn't go for the DMP-3 pre-amps, so you got the Rolls PB-23 (phantom power box) instead. If you can come up with $150 more bucks scrap the Rolls and get the DMP-3.

also, the Tascam 428 comes with Cubasis VST so you could just keep the $600 used for Sonar and Ultrafunk and go with Cubasis for a while until you get use to recording and then step up to Cubase or switch to Sonar.

thanks cross, lazi

thanks for the all out lay down of what i could hook up for round 3000, ha impressive ya got it rite around exactly 3 g's. yea i can get more money if needed. hey lazi what would be cheaper, makin my own soundproof booth or buyin one.

and.....i was just thinkin. yall know how in the eminem song: cleanin out my closet, his voice is like overlapped and he is rapping like 3 different ways at the same time or sumthing and he sounds way cooler on the cd than he would in real life? how the shit do you do stuff like that?

no cross i have shit for luck we get no laptops hahah

1. Until you make some money you could use a closet with clothes or a bathroom with blankets.

2. He recorded 3 seperate tracks, then layered them over each other.

3. In this case, the desktop will probably be better for you.

software

Being a student ,if you going the sequencing software route look for an academic version ( which is the regular version at student price) of the one you trying to get.

Good luck

What's up, The Black Spy. I haven't seen you around these parts in a long time. ;)

i dont know wut anything does cuz iv never looked into it. trust me, my iq is round 218 soooooooo, believe me ill figure the stuff out, i just want ppl to tell me what all i need and ill worry bout the rest.

It doesn't matter how "HIGH" your IQ is because when it comes to street knowledge, and book knowledge you might have that but Recording/Engineering or Producing Knowledge is a whole other thing it is and it is gonna be a lot harder than you think because things keep on changing and you have to keep up and also it get's a lot more difficult with different equipment and switching from one brand to another is about the worst thing you can do because you will have to learn the machine all over again

relax

u have a lot to learn. me 2
dont rush research on your own at a g.c. or sam ash in your circumference or sumthin.these cats no what there talkin about and can be a lot of help. sometimes all that knowledge can be overwhelmin tho. as another rookie i can say whatever you buy your only gonna buy more anyway so 3 g's is just 4 start
good place 2 start 4 wut u want from where my new legs stand at tho would be mpc 2000,yamaha 4416 or little brother ,shure ksm27, and some head phones . by the time u learn this equipment u should hav some more cheese 4 some more equip.
practice different tequnics and learn wut u bring to the table. ull prob. find sumthin more interestin than overcrowdin your vocals
i could be wrong haven't heard song lately but em's song is voice doubled and adlibs. most cats get off like that. im a rookie but my ear is gettin more sensitive
after u start recording ull be suprised how u listen 2 music differently. soon ull understand what all these timers in hears talkin about 4 now hope a b.g. could be of help
