As far as gear, your situation sounds like you don't need to be blowing $3K on gear you don't know how to use. My advice is to download fruityloops and get acquainted with it. How do you even know if you LIKE making beats and recording?

If it turns out you enjoy it, buy an Audiophile from M-Audio, a Studioprojects mic, and the DMP-3 cross recommended. When you get to the point where you are capable of making serious recordings, then you can start thinking about spending serious cash.

if you are as smart as you say you are, you woulda known atleast the methods behind making professional recordings...shit, i knew that artists (eminem comes to mind) overdub and layer tracks/vocals in there songs before I even started to learn how to record....its common sense...
