Eric hasnt posted in awhile neither.

Hey, I'm right here. I think I am going to wait a bit before I post my results on their own. I would like to see Bryan post the Compiled Results first. As for the next contest, I don't think I will be judging. I think I'll sit this one out, and try to comment on the mixes as they come in, before the final judging.

Alrighty then fellas, pmc7 will be a 14track Country Cover Tune.

Peace Eddie

Hey Eddie - You might want to be carefull about using a cover tune for a PMC. I'm not sure but there might be copywrite issues with that.

Just a heads up..

Dave

True, didnt really think about that. Not sure of the legalities to doing this. Touchy area for sure. There are alot of cover bands, how do they get away with this? Hmmm we are not promoting or selling this cover song or making a profit off of it so where would the issue lie. I own a karaoke business and I pay for all my music so Im covered and the bar must pay ascap and bmi to ensure they can play music for the public. But I have no understanding about cover bands playing in public or recording. I wonder if Blue Bear would know the ins and outs of this? Is there a lawyer in the house?? :D

Oh and I went to work today to find out they extended our holiday so hopefully we can get this straightened out today.

Cover bands playing in bars are covered under the Venues blanket BMI/ASCAP license. If the cover band records a cover for their demo tape, or an album for sale, they must secure a license from the Harry Fox Agency. Even it this is not for sale, it is being distributed, and it is my understanding that a license is required. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

I would recommend against using a cover song for these contests, unless someone wants to pony up the $50, or so, it will take to secure the proper license.

I agree with pretty much all of that. The bottom line is, while music licensing isn't complex, it is a pain in the ass, and it's not free either.

This page did a decent job of covering some of the issues relating to the "coversong quagmire."

Thanks Chris and Eric !
Thanks so much for the info. So it looks like I wont be submitting the tracks after all. I called ascap and kinda got the run around no one really could answer my question directly since I wasnt selling this or tryin to make a profit. But to be on the safe side not a good ideal. I'm sure the band has a mechanical license, because they do some big shows in the tri state area. They also told me that is not the engineer's responsiblity to ensure they have a license and could not be held responsible but I really dont feel like putting myself in that situation. Thanks guys for all the info and I have learned something new today because of it. :D So it looks like we will have to find another song to work on...sorry all.

Eddie

Hey All Almost back from the BED of stuffed up head and closed nose.

I read all responses to my comments, yadda yadda yadda.

if you think I was overbearing I apologize, but rules are rules.

If things were a mistake (Like my missing horns) I would have appreciated a PM detailing that it was an error, so forth and so on.

I in no wise wanted to take the fun out of these contests, but rather increase the fun with different stuff to mix. However I wanted the playing field to be level and even and edits change the playing field.

Unfortuantley I am still unable to judge these mixes as I cannot hear frequencies under 500 Hz right now. Clogged Nasal Passages. and everything above 2k sounds like pain. LOL

So Eric will be posting his list as the official list. :)

If anyone has specific Q's about there mix and my opinion (aftrer all it was my song. LOL) feel free to PM and when this head clears up I will be honestly objective. :)

Cheers and have fun. So WHo is doing PMC 7, I just wanna be a contestant. Can't get mad at me for just competing. LOL

I thing I will do another entyr in a month or so. Too much drama. LOL

Now back to just plain having fun :) after all that is why we do music for the fun (oh yeah and the money to. LOL)

well good to hear that your getting better giles!
Was beginning to think you went MIA because of the 4 pages of gripes by everyone!

I have plenty of tunes tracked that could be used for future pmc's..rock stuff..let me know

Drum Roll Please.............

OK, per Bryan's request, It is now upon my shoulders to soley judge the winner. So without further fanfare......The Results.

Vestast and Vanbas, as you know, Bryan disqualified you guys. He requested that I leave your scores off the final results. Here is how I scored your mixes. The numbers are in order of how they would be plugged into the spreadsheet:

Vestast: 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 35
Vanbas: 6 5 5 4 5 4 4 33

uum how come im missing a score in the BALANCE BOX altogether?...Even if it sucked..shouldnt i still get atleast a 1 in there?....lol

Damn, a 2 for lowend and 1 for top end air. Seems sorta wierd that these were the areas I felt I might of had too much of. I was wondering if this is the reasons for the low scores in these area. Was it too much lowend or not enough? Too much on the high end or not enough.

I figured now that my room is put back together I would have done a much better job then the last two contest I entered. Now Im thinking wtf is wrong with my mixing. What are they hearing that Im not?

Cool - Thanks Eric

Well after three of these contests, at least I am pretty consistent at being in the middle... always in the middle for air and depth. I am wondering if i am not hearing my stereo image well due to flutter (not to mention being in a 8x8 room with no treatment) :D

Markaholic, your balance certainly did not suck. Somehow, the cell got zeroed out when I was trying to created the gif to get posted, or something, I'm not quite sure.

I have updated the Scores Post. If you still see an empty cell, hit refresh on your browser. I am sorry.

PTuser,

I scored your mix the way I did because it was seriously lacking in the midrange. Had I been given a category to score the midrange, as well, You might have seen different numebrs in the "low end" and the "air" categories. It's sort of a "is it half empty, or half full" situation. Since I can't score for the midrange, I gave you low scores in both the 'low end" and "air" categories. Relative to the midrange, there was way too much lo end, and hi-end.

I hope that makes sense.

What volume level are you mixing at?

You would have a great mix if you could bring back some of the midrange.
