Heya cats - so here is the quiz - how does one determine optimum cable thickness/core configuration/composition for recording/sound gear?Is gold connection worth it(measurable)?
Cables obviously impact heavily on fidelity and it is easy to go overspec and spend money I could have spent on fast women.
What is the go?
Thanx

How much wiring do you have to do? Just a few pieces of gear or a lot?

Fast response

Hey are you as good looking as you are quick?
OK - I am trying to setup a reasonably comprehensive budget system (with immaculate sound!!!) Presently I am running a P4 2 GHz with CEP,BIAB,T-Racks etc. I have recently acquired a pair of Samick K9512 (600w per channel,1200 watts bridged) power amps and 2 speaker cabinets with Eminence 400 W RMS drivers and treble horns.I intend to beef up the bass with an 18" sub driven exclusively from one amp,so guess I'll need an electronic crossover/splitter?
I don't presently have a mixer/preamp so the sound is unstartling driven by CD,another of several purchasing decisions to be addressed.Figured I'd look for an eight track Behringer or similar.
Once set up I hope to be able to record with sufficient fidelity to impress(of course) and while I hope to compile an audiophile system down the track, for now a good sound from my cheapo setup will have to suffice - unless you guys do interest free loans.....
Any help/advice as to whether I am on the right track or just blowing $$$$$ will be much appreciated.
Your service kind Sir is impeccable and I commend and applaud you for it.

Good cables are always a good idea. I wired my system with Beldon which I think is a good wire. I have about 3200' of it all told. If I would have used Mogami Star Quad or something like it, I would've had to refinance my house. If I didn't need so much I would've went for better wire but I must say, I hear NO degradation in my system at all.

Yo TrackRatMan:

Heh, heh, heh....

3200 feet? Man, you must live in Grand Rapids and record in Seattle?

Yeh, that's a long cable.

I like to invest in all types of cables: expensive = limited for the mic & vocals. Medium priced = my syn to DAW. Good cables = the rest of my rig.

I could never quite understand oxygen free wire == doesn't that strangle the signal?

Green Hornet:p :p :p

When I bought two 96 point TT bays from a Nashville studio a few years ago, each came hard wired with 50' of Belden cable on each point. That's almost 10,000 feet of wire just coming from the patch-bays!!!

It ain't hard to go through a lot of wire fast, hense my orginal question about how much would be needed. Only 100' total then something like Star quad could be more affordable but 3000'+ can get real expensive real fast.

Thanks guys - don't know how available these brands are here in the back woods :)

I just Bought out my local mars location of thier Mogami cable at approx $.10 a foot. Did I do good here TrackRat?

Darrin2K....10cents a foot????...how???

I just stopped by my local Mars today and HEY!! they are going out of business completely......

...probably old news but I'm slow......

Anyway I didn't see anything THAT cheap........

.....of course I was only picking up about 40 feet of the mogami instrument cable.....

Did you buy a LARGE quantity??????

Where do you get that very small gage stuff they make the snakes out of??????

BTW....the also have 80min Microbords CD-R's fo like .50cents a pop.

-mike

I bought out KCs supply of the remainding cable, I think enough to use for all of the connections in the studio.

Do cables make an obvious difference? That is either debatable or debated or something like that....My vote would be go with the fast women. Buy fancy cables when your older and don't care so much about fast women.

I was just losing sleep because I am so particular and anal about things that I need to have the best I can afford in my chain.

MONTSER CABLE

I must say the gold connectors and the really thick cables do look really nice,When i put together ny studio i went with all Monster Cable...Is it better??I can tell you from my years at Lockheed Electronics,I would ask the techies about the gold plating and they'd all tell me the same thing,It does not make for better sound, all they do is make for a better connection over time, meaning very little oxidation, they stay cleaner longer!!And yes i believe in the oversized cable on everything i use....
