Tried the 300 guitar and 700 bass out today at a music store. Anyone notice how they both have nothing under the pick guard? If you hit it in the fury of your playing, it makes a hollow sound pretty loudly. For the guitar it was sort of annoying to hear as I played on low volume and the pick occasionally scraping the board. But for the bass, oh man. I was slapping out the Coffee Shop Flea solo and that thing was so frickin annoying. I know they need to do that to put the electronics in there, but damn that was just a weird sound to hear coming from the instrument. Too bad, I thought it felt like a nice solid bass aside from that. They're making a 5 string version now too.

Another thought.....is there some kind of plague that is keeping the basses from selling? Cause they're giving away the PODxt live bass version with them now. I was annoyed by the pick guard noise but still...kind of a cool bass to have on hand.

Do you mean besides the fact that they are the 00's equivalent to a Casio?

The Variax line of modeling instruments are nothing more than a tool; useful for some, not for others. One thing for sure, nobody is going to figure them out in a few hours in a music store. I've been using one since the fall of 2004 and it's damn handy for some live and recording situations.

I actually read about them a lot online before I went to check them out. I wasn't baffled by the electronics, on the contrary, that's what I thought was cool. Anyway, that has nothing to do with whether or not I find it annoying to hit the pick guard (it is intended to come into contact with a pick after all) and hear a hollow cavity sound. Does this not bother anyone else?

Let's try to avoid making this into a classic variax argument thread.

the variaxe 700 guitar is of a far higher quality than the 300 & doesn't have a pickguard

I don't have a problem with the bass (700 V/axe) as I use my fingers 90% of the time

as the man said earlier it's a fantastic tool to have at one's disposal

the whole pick hitting the guard is all a question of technique, try recording acoustic guitar with click of the pick on the guard & it soon trims up the ol' technique

I have a bass pod & to be honest I record DI'd 90% of the time

a variaxe freak

Yea, noticed it the most on the guitar when I playing John Mayer's "Neon," which kind of has a bass slap technique to it. When my fingers went between the strings to pluck is when I hit the pick guard. Just gave it too much of a cheap feel. I don't think all the 700's have no pick guard, only the curved top ones? Or not?
