did you make that diffuser panel with all of the woodblocks? how'd you do it?

yeah I started by making a 2' by 3' INSIDE DEMINSION frame from 1 x 4 pine(.75"x3.5") then cut some 4' pieces of 2x2's(1.5" x 1.5") into random sized pieces, ranging from 1'' to 4'' pieces. i then cut some 1/8" plywood to 2' X 3' for a backing to crew the wood blocks to. I took some scrap pieces of 3/4" and made a "ledge" around the frame for the plywood to rest on and add some support and started laying blocks in the frame....

A problem I ran into that explains the gapped places is the blockes were not exactly 1.5" by 1.5" they may have been a 16th bigger so over a distance the 16th's added up and didn't fit exactly so i just split the difference of the gap and made it symmetrical.

other info...I pilot holed every block, if i didn't they would split. So there ya go...

Sometimes I think diffusers are like the old Pet Rocks from years ago or bottled water....I mean I see them for sale at outrageous prices and am curious to know if they really make a difference. I have a small room studio and have read and heard that they can really make a difference, but asking someone who built one and what he thought would make up my mind...

you did a great job and it looks better than the pro models I have seen... They sure look cool in a studio and I might build one just for the art and ambience factor alone...

Actually, I could tell a very small difference so small it was probably just my ears playing tricks on me cause I wanted it to work. But it is def. more of an art piece, kind of like a small decorative lamp, looks great but doesn't put out much light. I'm sure if that entire wall was like that you'd def. be able to tell a difference. But what made the drastic and I mean DRASTIC change where the suede panels. I always loved the way the Auralex's looked and I'm a DIY'er so yeah. Thanks

they are made out of some 1x2 frames with 2" Owens Corning 703 Mineral Fiber panels. the panels are 2'x4' and they are covered with a suede material i bought from a fabric company.

Just a note on diffusers. They are not random. There is a science to the length and order.

In the case of this diffuser they are absolutely random, no science what so ever. But for professional ones you are correct.

What NL5 is saying is that a completely randomized sequence is not necessarily a good thing. It can result in combining effects that are worse than a flat surface. There are a ton of great DIY skyline designs out there.

I'd also check out the SM pro mic thing

It's cheaper than the RF filter, the sides are adjustable, and best of all, it comes with a heavy duty boom stand.

Demo Studios

Here's my first demo setup; just a Tascam 424,an ART FXR, one SM57 and a pair of Sony MDR7506's was it! Bare bones beginning recording circa 1994:

My last demo studio; a Tascam 488mkII, Tascam CDR, Digitech Studio Quad V2 , Behringer Compressor, ART Dual MP, ART Compressor and the old ART FXR for old times sake. Alesis Monitor One's for monitors, Rode NT2A, Audio Technica AT2020, Shure SM57 and Digital Reference Drum Mics. A Johnson J-Station for guitars at night and an old Yamaha SU10 for samples. From 2001-2008:

Currently getting a small setup together around a Tascam DP02. These studios were for demos only but they were more fun than a ProTools/Neve console pro studio most sessions. Long live home recording!

And the fun begins....

I'm JUST starting home recording, so im essentially a newbie, though I have dabbled in the past with some home recording. So this is my studio now, hopefully in the next few months I can post my completed, simple home studio. I'm in an apartment, and this is not just a studio but a studio / exercise room (not shown in pics lol) / homework area, seeing as I'm also finishing up college with a major in Computer Science.

PS. Yeah.... dunno whats up with the yellow hue going on there.. apparently my overhead light and my iphone do not like each other
