    Software monitor matrix?

I run two different interfaces in my PC, driving two sets of speakers. The first is a stereo output running my main monitors, the second is a 5.1 output running my surround speakers. Right now, if I want to change which interface gets the sound piped to it, I have to change it in the individual...

    SCSI questions - hardware sampler

Hi, I'm new to the sampling game, and I've decided to get myself a hardware sampler to have a mess about with. I'm being offered an E-mu ESI 32 at a good price, so I think I'll probably go for that. My questions are about storing samples. I'm presuming that the 1.44MB provided by the floppy...

Porting EXS instruments from Logic into Reaper

Hi, Up until now I've only used Reaper for simple audio recording and manipulation. I'd like to try out some of Reaper's MIDI capability, and rather than remapping all my custom sampler instruments inside Reaper, it'd be really useful for me to find some way of converting the EXS files from...

Protecting the drivers on your monitors?

I notice that many monitors have nothing to cover their drivers. Even though this looks really nice, I can't help but wonder if it's a problem - I always thought that a driver would need more protectiong than that? How fragile is the loudspeaker cone, does it need protecting by a grill etc?

Dean Evo XM - used guitar advice

Hi, I'm an acoustic player primarily, and haven't really done much on electric. I'd like to start experimenting a bit with electric guitars, and want something cheap to get me started. The Dean Evo XM guitars have some good reviews, and go for a great price. I've found a used one (great...

    VBR MP3 encoding in Nero

I'm learning about VBR encoding, but I can't seem to fathom the scale in Nero 6. Where the CBR options are in kbps, the VBR options range from 0-9. What do these numbers mean, what do they correspond to? I can't find anything through Google that explains this scale, so can somebody who...

Monitors - sorry to be cheap, but I need some advice

Hi, Yes, I am aware that I'll likely be shot a few times on this thread for even mentioning the concept of holding back on how much I spend on monitors, but I'm going to ask anyway. I'm a student, I'm very, very skint, and I'm wondering where the next small amount of cash I find should go. I do...

    Mains Wiring questions

We're building a log cabin outside the house for music, and soon getting to the point where we need to install mains wiring. Can anyone tell me anything I might need to be aware of in placing the cables. I'm not sure how it works, but could it cause audible mains hum or ground loops, and if so...

Audio Technica AT 2020 or Behringer B-2 Pro

Hi, I'm getting a new large diaphragm mic, and I think I've narrowed it down to two options. A lot of people on here rave about the AT 2020 and it's on eBay for £65. However I've also heard that the Behringer B-2 Pro is a pretty decent mic for the price, and I'm being offered one (lightly used)...

M-Audio Nova or Behringer B-2 Pro

Both these mics are fairly cheap but have decent reviews. Can anyone with any experience with either mic give me some guidance on which one to go for?

    Diaphragm Sizes in behringer mics

I have two types of behringer mics, just to give them a whirl, the C-2 (small diaphragm condenser) and the C-3 (large dual diaphragm condenser). Let's not discuss the sound here, as it seems any time Behringer is mentioned around here it leads to massive tangents, I'm just puzzled by the...

Signal to Noise Ratio and Mic Self Noise - How does it work?

I'm struggling to get my head around the two different figures that microphone specifications seem to give. The first is Signal to Noise Ratio, given in dB. Is a high rating good here? The other is the self noise, given in dBA - what does dBA mean? And it seems that the reverse is true here...

Theatrical Stage Micing - What's the best method?

We're putting on a show involving singing, dancing, acting, comedy and all the rest of it, and it's been left up to me to get the sound sorted for it. So, in your humble and wise opinions, what's the best method to use to mic up the stage? At my disposal, I've got two boundary mics, three...

    Video capture with multitrack audio?

Hi, I'm looking to start recording a few performance videos to put up on youtube, and I'd really like the setup to be similar to how I'd record when it's just audio. So using a few mics, maybe recorded at different times and tracked over each other, like I would in any multitrack audio...

Loop pedals - digitech or boss

Alright, I'm looking at two loop pedals that both seem to be pretty good, and they've both got similar specs, and they're about the same price too. Digitech Jamman and Boss RC20XL Anybody got anything to throw in the pot that'll tip the balance either way? Or any suggestions of other pedals up...

    Budget Kick-drum mics? PG52 Authenticity?

I'm looking at the cheapest Kick mics I can find for now. Does anybody know anything about the Samson Q Kick? I know many people will just sneer at it automatically because of it's branding but anyone got anything constructive? From other reviews it seems surprisingly good... Also, there's...

PCI card coupler or doubler or something?

A desktop PC I want to use in the studio only has two PCI slots on the motherboard, and it'd make things alot easier if there were three. Is there some sort of external box or adapter or something that will allow to connect two or three cards to one slot? Is this possible? The two PCI slots...

    Drum mics

I have SD pencil condensers for overheads, and some sm57s and 58s at my disposal. I can spend a little bit on buying 1 or two other mics, maybe a kick mic as im guessing the 57s won't work so well on bass? Any ideas?

Monitors - Behri MS40 or Samson Resolv 40a - which is less crap?

Right, I'm on a real tight budget, looking at £100/$200 tops for a pair of powered monitors. The Behringer MS40s and Samson Resolv 40a are about the same price, have roughly the same spec. The Behris have more inputs and a digital input too, but to be honest I'm not fussed about that. Please...

    Wiring a telephone in?

Yup, I want to wire in a standard (well, dirt cheap £2.49 tesco value ;) ) landline phone to record it. So 2 questions: 1 - Does the phone-y sound you get from a phone come from the process of micing, sending down miles and miles of cabling, then coming out of a tiny speaker on the other end...
