Protecting the drivers on your monitors?

I notice that many monitors have nothing to cover their drivers. Even though this looks really nice, I can't help but wonder if it's a problem - I always thought that a driver would need more protectiong than that? How fragile is the loudspeaker cone, does it need protecting by a grill etc?

If you've got cats or something scratching themselves on your speakers, then put the grilles on. But they aren't going to get damaged unless someone does something to damage them..

I try not to let animals or immature idiots into my studio. Otherwise, the dust doesn't do that much damage when it lands on the cones.

The closest they ever came to being damaged was that time when I banged my date over the mixer. :D
