only trying to be helpful
Littledog,
You're right that none of us misinterpreted dobro's phrase. Even I, the one who tried to make clarification, didn't misinterpret dobro's phrase. Nevertheless there's a clearer way of putting that message across.
Dobro himself acknowledged that after reading my post.
I enjoy the casual and colourful use of language in a bbs. But in this particular case I noticed that the sentence was referring to Harvey. It would have been unfortunate if a sentence intended to highlight the guru's contribution had appeared to mean something opposite, even though Harvey, I'm sure, would understand the intended meaning.
Double negatives ain't no problem in my book. But dobro's original sentence is not a double negative. It is not a slang or an idiomatic expression either.
In my post I didn't call for strict compliance with syntax. I took care to avoid using words like "mistake", "error", "wrong" or "confusing". In the last paragraph I emphasized that I was only trying to be helpful. I even apologised in advance for pointing out something obvious.
These efforts do not appear to be adequate for some.
