Giles -

Is there anything (from the artists standpoint) you can tell us about the "scat" parts. I have them in my mix, but they are the only part that doesn't seem to fit into the song.

Thanks.

Think Percussion....The scat was added as an additional percussive element.

OK - that's kinda how I approached it. It's actually in my "assorted percussion group" - all the percussion parts except (kick, snare and shaker) It's part of the background action, not up front like the main vox and bgv's.

Thanks!

Man I totally meant AS.
I've put them in Audition, started them at 00:00 and it's totally timeless.... I 'll join in next time or something.

Yeah when I realized what song you meant I totally went ape. i Love that song. LOL but the way we produce is she sings a hook and then we create a track. matter of fact the Keyboard was the foundation there was no idea of the verses except that they would be about 16 bars long :)

All right, looks like I got files that are gonna work for me.

Thanks RT, sorry I didn't get back to ya sooner to let you know how it went.

Still don't have stuff imported, but It looks like it should work now.

I'm taking off today for home (From school) for winter break. Reckon I'll burn the stuff on a cd, as I believe an old laptop we've got at home still has cubase on it. Might be version 5 and not sx, but I'll still give it a try. Might hafta mix with some crappy phones or something, but I dont have real monitors here anyway.

I was thinking about that, and thought it might be kinda fun to try and mix completely with your eyes - clever use of a frequency analyzer to try and get a feel for the dynamics, levels and tone. Sounds kinda neat, I might try it sometime.

So I wont have too much time to work on this one, as I'll be busy with family and friends, but I'm gonna at least make an attempt, as I didn't get around to it last couple times.

Cant wait to hear what the song sounds like. I guess I'll find out if I listen to somebody else's mix or bring the tracks in and play a bit before I leave, but I still hafta pack stuff. Mainly dirty clothes and nessecities I dont have at home, so shouldn't be too bad.

Ok, here's my first version, if anyone has any comments they would be totally appreciated!

I think it's pretty solid, but I'm sure I'll change my mind in a day or so. It always kinda scares me when I'm happy with my first mix, because later I usually hate it....

I had a little time today to work on a rough mix. Any helpful hints from you guys would be great.

Sounds pretty solid, I like how the low end sits. Some of the percussion stuff is a little loud, like the guiro and the conga bends. Sounds like you hard panned the backup vox, and to me it sounds like they're too outside the music. Not bad though!

New mix..not final...i think i got the bkground note giles mentioned...not to sure though.
Any ideas from anyone on what needs improved ?

Your mix sounds kinda trebley, and lacking the low mids and lows. Some of your perc. sounds a little bit loud, especially the conga bend. Also your lead double sounds a little loud for a double and it cramps the lead vox's style, rather than backs it up. Your backup vox sound a little loud, and panned a little too far out also. I think once you take another swipe at it, you'll have a pretty solid mix here.

Hey -

Sounds pretty good on the studio monitors, but when I listen on the home stereo the bottom end is WAY overloaded. Otherwise, sounds good.

Here is mine -

I'm gonna go back and work on fattening up the bass a little...I had it too bottom heavy, but now it's too thin I think.

Yeah, I'm sure it's pretty bottom heavy, I'm still having trouble finding the happy place for my lowend on my Wharfedales. I'm definatly going to work on that, as well as compressing the bass diffrently, a lot of the upper twang on the bass gets too loud at times. As for your mix, it does sound good, and you're right about the bass being a little thin. Once you get that fixed, I think you've got a really good mix going. Also I caught a bunch of little bits of static in your mp3. I don't think it's clipping, I'm thinking it's more of your mp3 converter or something. Just something to check on - thx for the feedback!

Well... I seem to come in about the middle of the pack each time.

So here is my 1st attempt.
1st attempt

I tried something different. Something new.

Thoughts?

Thanks! I didn't even notice that - don't know how I missed it (although, my mixing enviroment is far from ideal)

Anyway, I fattened the bass back up a bit, and added a few db to it as well. Also realiized I could record the mixdown at 24 bit inside a 16 bit project - HUGE difference. I'm pretty happy with it now - I think.

Tell me what you think -

Alright downloaded this last night and loaded it up earlier today. I actually had some time this week to check this Mix Contest but im going to be completely booked next week and all through Christmas break so this is probably going to be the only chance i have to get this in. Spent about an hour on it and i think its pretty much ready. Im sure i could spend a little more time with details on automation and a few special things but as a basic mix its not going to get much better from me. And i think i have mixing ADD because i switch between mixes every hour because i cant stand to work on the same mix for longer than that and i probably will be too lazy to pull this back up :D.

So here it is. It was a fun song. I really like to mix other peoples tracks. This was really busy with all the percussion so the thing that took most of the time was just finding out and organizing what was actually there to work with. Nothing with overly difficult to fit into the mix once i had a full perspective on what was there. The only thing i didnt really know what to do with was the keyboard. I basically got the idea that its more of a background filler than anything up in front. But theres some real talent in this music. Real horns would sound awesome. Maybe ill add them in myself for fun :D.

Alright, im done blabbing. Time for me to pull something else up.

(edit) doh. forgot to post where it was at. Here it is...

Darnold, we have charted them for the live hit.

I actually after the keyboard horn part was laid searched around for horn players (10 pc section) that wouldnt break the bank :) But they all wnate upwards of 1500 + to play a simple already charted part. Not for me at this stage of the game. maybe this next album :)

A Latin Horn section would be perfect though :)

I should have used a smiley, that was supposed to be funny in a dim witted sort of way.

These massive mixes are a challenge for me, but I guess that's what this is all about, so hell, bring 'em on

Well i could try and put a few tracks of trombone in there for yah if your interested. I dont know any first hand trumpet players to do it though. Thats alot of money for something like this, so they better be good. Thats what i like about the area i live in. Theres alot of average players around here, and then sometimes theres a few outstanding players. But no matter who they are they are all willing to contribute their skills for little cost. Its really convenient and i have alot of options. I think its because i live in a college town.

Even though theirs alot of tracks to this song, its really not too extensive as far as mixing goes because its already clean. Minor EQ changes if any at all for the percussive instruments. So its really just finding the best pan to place everything and at what volume. But once you nail it, everything else forms together pretty well.

Lead vocals were recorded pretty quiet. Maybe they wernt and it was a weird file problem, but i had to add like 30 dbs gain on them to get them up. The only other major fix i had to do was with the bass. Im almost feeling like i over did it there though. It has very light compression to keep it dynamic, but i had to use some precision EQ to tame of those nasty notes.

Anyway. Some feedback on my mix would be nice. Maybe someone will bring up a perspective of it and motivate me to dig into it again. :D

Sounds pretty good to me. The only thing i didn't like was the Guiro being so out in front, but that's more of a taste thing.

Nice Job! :)
