buying an 388, need help/advice!

Allrite then, I'll try it out as soon as I get some power-supplier. :)
and yeah, the midi stuff is no problem, it's just that I'm totally lost when it comes to analog recording.

I'm a bit confused on this with loading the tape etc, because if I load the tape - it plays the tape forward etc, I reset the time-stamp so it knows where the "loaded" start point is. but if I turn off the machine, I'll have to load again (right?), and then it won't go from the position I had the last time. Instead it does the same procedure as last time and I just get longer and longer into the tape. Which is the right procedure with this? Everything concerning the tape-handeling is a bit blurry for me, and I can't say the manual helped me on this (or I've missed it). And if storing more than one track on each tape, how do I do that I a correct manner?

and finally: if I've made a couple of tracks on a tape, and then remove it - and after a while, I want to check out the track I made - I put the tape back and load, will it really find the same load-start point as last time...?

I guess you're all laughing now, but hey ;)

Yeah. The tape fast forwarding a few feet is perfectly normal. Don't worry about it. As long as you put the tape back on in the same way as the first time the load function should take you pretty close to where the program material actually starts.

Once the tape is on and loaded you can forget about the load function. Just remember to use RTZ for rewinds and keep an eye on it when FFing.

You may use an adapter to facilitate using 1/4" plugs into the XLR mic inputs,...

and therefore you may take advantage of the preamp/Trim stage for boost on line-level devices, if necessary.

No harm in using this adapter, below. I keep several of these handy, and am currently using 4 of them on my 388, to adapt line inputs and mics with 1/4" plugs to the XLR mic inputs.

See: 1/4"(F) - XLR(M) adapter.

The 388's LOAD function...

is a feature that winds about a minute (or so) of tape on the beginning of the takeup reel, as a zero-point, and will also STOP prior to spooling tape off the supply reel, when in play/rec/ff/rw mode. It's ONLY designed to work with 1800' reels, being Quantegy 457 & equivalents. It's intended to make the 1800' reel of tape mimic the function of a cassette! Yes!

You have the manual, so you've already read about the LOAD function!

As far as using 1.5 mil 456 and equivalents, there may be some minor considerations, as per the above, but it's workable nonetheless. I use mostly 1200' reels of 456-compatible tape in my 388 with no problems.;)

Sure! Daily!

Ok, so the 457 is 1 mil like the 407 ... but what are the differences between the 2 ? Is the oxide different in some way ?

Thanks,

Daniel
