erm...

Have you tried turning down the bass knob on your amp?

Put your amp on a table or chair, or otherwise get it off of carpet. I have my amp sitting on a 2" maple butcher block.

Also, get the amp away from the walls, like into the middle of the room-- and the biggest room you can get too.

That won't give him more treble. It'll give him less bass. It's not the same thing.

Everything is relative when it comes to recording. It could be that some of the other tracks are too bright. I haven't tried the 609 but I do know that a 57 isn't particularly bright. Maybe try blending the top end of a condensor in with the 57 or 609 track.

I hear ya but he said he likes his bass levels...I hate when I have to compromise one sound for another.

Change your strings first of all.

Did that... didn't work. Tried new EQ's, Hot plate, nothing gave me the sweet high end.

THe amp is against the wall so I'll try moving it around.

Other than that would changing or trying new tubes help?

Changing tubes isn't going to make a huge change.

Ok...hum speaker change? Or is it time to look into a new amp

It's all relative. Turning down everything but the treble and then turning up the volume will give him more treble.

To the OP - Have you tried an inline EQ?

But he'll lose mids and bass...like I said, the comparative way of doing things still means you've to compromise on a tone you were originally happy with.

No he won't. If he turns down the mids and bass and then turns up the amp to where the mids and bass are as loud as they were before, he'll have more treble in the mix.

Of course that's from a theoretical standpoint; if his gain is otherwise at a sweet spot and can't take the adjustment without moving off it, then he may be SOL with that guitar and amp unless he takes other measures (obviously), but it's at least something he should try before doing something more drastic.

Yep, tried an rack and footpeddle EQ, even going as far to buy a MXL 10 band. EQ has little of the desire effect.

I think it's a head room issue, no matter how I play with the EQ I'm still not getting the searing highs I'm looking for. In fact it seems the higher I crank it the more blanket over the speaker sound I get. That is why I asked about Tubes and speakers as a way to get a wider range.

I think I may look at some other amps. I don't want to go through the whole process due to time restaints but if the Amp isn't going to give me what I need, maybe it's time.

That may be what you are looking at. I'm sorry to say. I have an old Deluxe Reverb that has the sweetest, clearest high end of any amp I have ever owned. I also have a Blues Jr, and on a gig (for some reason I can't remember, but it sounded like a good idea at the time) I decided to bring it instead of the Deluxe. Big mistake. The Jr is a great little amp for a crunchy Les Paul sound, but for a chimy, quacky Strat sound, it just doesn't cut it. It's just too dark no matter what I do to it. You may very well just be trying to use the wrong tool for the job at hand.

Hey, greenascanbe - I just had a look at the Genz Benz web site and viewed the product video for the 100W El Diablo, on which your amp is based.

From what I can tell, as least on the video, this amp just is not very bright, even on the clean channel. The hot channel sounds pretty murky, scooped or not. It sounds well suited for what's being used in newer popular metal and rock, but I'm not sure you'll ever get a really brilliant sound out of it. :(

Yeah. Just because it's a good amp doesn't mean that it will do everything well.

Absolutely. It looks like a good piece of gear.

Now go buy a Fender or a Vox, willya? :)

I went out and tried the fenders and the voxs

I wish the Fender® Hot Rod Deluxe Amp had a little more low end but I think that is what I'm going to go with.

Thanks all

Good luck! :)

And, hey, if you want a little more bottom end punch from that Fender, run it through a closed back cab - you've got one, right?

.

I did some recording lately with my Blues Jr, and I got a great sound out of it by lying it flat on its back on the carpet and turning it up.
