Difference between a reference and production master

We are using one of the big guys in Hollywood to master our album. On top of the very large hourly fee they charge $500 for the production master. What is the difference between the production master and the much cheaper reference CD? and is it necessary? We will be using ISRC codes so im...

    Mastering fiasco

I do not claim to anybody, including clients, that i am good at mastering. But for those people on a tight budget i tell them that I can at least space the songs out, get levels even and bump the tracks a little louder. My process in protools 1-Import all tracks into new session (keeping at...

This may be more appropriate in the MIDI forum but, can somebody lay out a step by step of how to transfer a beat as individual tracks (16 tracks total) from a MOTIF into Pro-Tools and have everything line up. Thanks!

    Fixing that shitty kick

I know we all have had to fix a really shitty kick at some point, hopefully our engineering skils weren't at fault. I just had a drummer who must have been afraid of breaking his kick cause he barely hit it. There was no way I was going to get him to play it harder so i figured i would just...

Built-in Vs. soundhole pickup for Taylor

Ive heard some great things about the built-in pickups and electronics of taylor guitars, but are they really worth the extra $500? Or is the money better spent on an extra soundhole pickup and a better model.

    Power Tube recommendations (6L6)

I need some new power-tubes for my Mesa 2:100 rectifier power amp. I definitely want to stick with the 6L6. I play mainly hard rock/metal so I like a fair amount of gain. Does anybody have any recommendations? Chinese vs Russian? Any advice would help, thanks.

    Re-amp anything?

I tried reamping a snare track through a mesa amp and cab. It sounded pretty good. But is this safe to do or could it mess up my amp? The main thing im worried about is the sharp transient of a drum hit. Can pretty much anything be reamped as long as care is taken when setting levels etc?

    Cables-signal loss with long cables

I need to buy some longer cables. I need about 30 ft. Monster cables have 30ft cables in their P500 models and Mogami has 50ft in their gold models for the same price. I have always been happy with mogami and the extra length may come in handy but will cables that long 50 vs 30ft have any...

A couple of questions about foam

    1) Auralex etc usually make their foam with either the shingle or egg crate style design thus the foam is thicker in some place and thinner in others. They say this is for broadband absorption but wouldn't a piece that was two inches thich everywhere do a better job at accomplishing this? 2)...
