Fixing that shitty kick

I know we all have had to fix a really shitty kick at some point, hopefully our engineering skils weren't at fault. I just had a drummer who must have been afraid of breaking his kick cause he barely hit it. There was no way I was going to get him to play it harder so i figured i would just "sound replace" it in the mix". one problem: he hit his snare real hard and the kick mic picked up the snare sometimes better than the kick thus making it impossible to replace only the kick hits without doing it one by one.

Solution: after some brainstorming i took an EQ and used a low pass filter down to about 100hz or less and boosted the gain by 10db. I then wrote that to track. This virtually eliminated the snare and left me with an awful sounding but easy to replace track.
Im guessing this kind of techinique could come in handy elsewhere so I just thought Id throw it out there.
