Not at all. I was just as much a metal fan as the next guy and am still infatuated with it but much of the 80's seemed to be an olympic marathon of the fastest shred and heaviest crunch that eventually reached its limit of being as cutting edge and impressive as it originally was. Heavy for heavy's sake and speed for speed's sake no longer nessisarly equalled a better or more talented act. It just got a little stale is all and any metal fans who were open minded enough to not reguard any act less heavy than Slayer as being "posers" (possibly the funniest 80's term ever) were just as able to appriciate the newer alternative but still metal influenced fusions that were evolving.

10-15 years ago, 90% of these "bands" on Headbangers Ball or whatever would have NEVER gotten a record deal.
Technology has made these CRAP bands able to make records/videos very cheap . And cheaper for the industry too.
When I watch HBB, there might be 2 or 3 newer bands worth crap. Most is just rehashed Metallica riffage and that TERRIBLE "hardcore" singing, Pantera wannabees....like the host Jamie's band...just terrible.
On the other end of this talentless spectrum is the noodle-riffers that just play fast, technical garbage that put nothing into songwriting. I wouldn't buy one of these cd's if 15 bucks fell out of my arse.
Dime pretty much solidified drop D tuning back in early 90's, but when he did it, it was for a purpose...now it's just used to be "heavy", and it sounds terrible and muddy.
Just droptune it down to D and scream. Awful.
