You can't kill the metal.
The metal will live on.

Grunge tried to kill the metal
Hahahahaha they failed as they were thrown to the ground.

:D :D

Rust. Rust destroyed metal. Either that or oxidation in general. I would think that this goes without saying. :D

metal is back where it belongs - off of the mainstream radio.

being off the radio gives the artists more creative room. Radio killed metal. The 80's killed metal. The fans of that era killed metal by making it a fad.

None of the bands above killed metal - they were just doing their thing in the era.

I think "HEAVY" killed metal. It went from being heavy to heavier to heaviest and the singing and riffs all just seemed to get shittier and shittier in the quest for being the heaviest, sickest, most inhuman sounding band on the planet. In the end any newly signed metal bands just started sounding like less talented over the top versions of the last and it no longer appealed to the masses of even the most dedicated metal fans.

It was bands like Nirvana, Sound Garden, STP and Alice in Chains that really put the quality back into heavy music by incorperating the good songwriting and soulful singing it so desperately needed and acts like Dream Theatre and Joe Satriani took it in another direction for those shredders who always liked metal purely from an instrumentalist standpoint.

Also, as with any music fad, the metal fans and musicians of that era just kind of all grew up an matured in thier musical tastes. It will surely creep back in some form again just like the modern punk sound has. I dont think it ever completely left though, it just got more diversified and re-labeled as something else.

Not at all. I was just as much a metal fan as the next guy and am still infatuated with it but much of the 80's seemed to be an olympic marathon of the fastest shred and heaviest crunch that eventually reached its limit of being as cutting edge and impressive as it originally was. Heavy for heavy's sake and speed for speed's sake no longer nessisarly equalled a better or more talented act. It just got a little stale is all and any metal fans who were open minded enough to not reguard any act less heavy than Slayer as being "posers" (possibly the funniest 80's term ever) were just as able to appriciate the newer alternative but still metal influenced fusions that were evolving.

I love that song. No one can destroy the metal. The metal will strike you down with a vicious blow....

Rock on.

UUUGGH....the 80's.....

It's all subjective. When I say "metal" I am nowhere near the 80's. THat is the most frustrating thing about liking metal. People automatically think I'm talking about the 80's stuff with big hair, make up, and spadex, when in reality I am talking about what that has evolved into. Metal was literally in it's infancy in the 80's, and the look and the flashiness is evidence of it. Since then, it has matured greatly and is more then capable of earning respect from a purely musical perspective. No shred, no flash, no pomp, no posing needed...anymore.

You know what else is totally subjective? Heaviness for the sake of being heavy. To me, that refers to the blackest of black metal, extreme grind core with 90% blast beats, and the growliest of death metal vocals, all with notes blazing by so fast you'd have to use a new pick for every song. But...to you.....heavy for the sake of being heavy could be Linkin Park.

Even the word "heavy" cannot be defined in a way that everyone will agree with. For example, to me, Carcass' Heartwork is some of the heavist shit EVER. To others, that album is a sell-out piece of crap.

It didnt get killed..but i voted korn anyway cause i hate korn..so much. I dont like metal all that much, and i really hate it when people obsess how much better it is than anything else....so you can call nirvana closeminded, but its really (crazy/intense) metal fans that are. Ive listened to everything, and i like a little bit of everything..and i dont stick to one genre cause i think its awesome. Thats my 2 cents.

When i came back from lunch, XM comedy had eddie murphy doing that thing about Aunt bunnie and the barbeque. When i got into the office, I brought up xm online and listened to the rest of it.

When it was done, i noticed at the bottom were "xm online exclusives" one of which was "metalcore". I decided to check it out. I immediately hear that low HM rhythm guitar riff they always play CHUGITA CHUNK CHUGITA CHUNK CHUGITA CHUGITA CHUNK. Which isn't so bad. Then the guy starts playing the typical sweeping nonsensical arpeggios. Then this guy start to "sing" like he's trying to get a loogie up. Like cookie monster or something. I laughed out loud when that started.

I really didn't mind the noodling, but when that guy started singing, the whole thing lost its appeal.

zed10r, you always go to bat for metal in this thread. I gotta give you your props for that. You are consistent.

metal never died..... ever.............. metal is actually doing really well right now.

In short, Metal killed itself.

10-15 years ago, 90% of these "bands" on Headbangers Ball or whatever would have NEVER gotten a record deal.

Technology has made these CRAP bands able to make records/videos very cheap . And cheaper for the industry too.

When I watch HBB, there might be 2 or 3 newer bands worth crap. Most is just rehashed Metallica riffage and that TERRIBLE "hardcore" singing, Pantera wannabees....like the host Jamie's band...just terrible.

On the other end of this talentless spectrum is the noodle-riffers that just play fast, technical garbage that put nothing into songwriting. I wouldn't buy one of these cd's if 15 bucks fell out of my arse.

Dime pretty much solidified drop D tuning back in early 90's, but when he did it, it was for a purpose...now it's just used to be "heavy", and it sounds terrible and muddy.

Just droptune it down to D and scream. Awful.

Hey, I was just looking for an ancient crusty thread to post on today!

Metal is not dead, and if you think it is you are most likely listening to the radio. If so, you are hearing the same 40 or so songs that major labels are paying Clear Channel to play - with a little filler to try to camoflage that fact.

Metal is alive and well, and in fact is making a resurgence. I do music promotion down here in Texas, and there are more venues and more good bands than there have been in a LONG time....

If you want to hear metal, don't listen to the radio. Find bands on myspace or some via some other independent source, and if you like their music, buy their CD's. That's the only way to hear good music anymore....

Well that was amusing.

The first four paragraphs I more or less agree with.

1st - true....but your statement seems to say that 10-15 years ago metal was better. That can only be true if your tastes and preferences are static and un changing AND you judge an entire genre based on what MTV gets paid to play.

2nd - No argument there. You are 100% correct.

3rd - Well THAT'S a given. You've got to remeber that most good metal bands are in it for the music and don't give a shit about videos....so they will never be on HBB in the first place.

4th - I gotta agree with you on the noodlers. Never cared for them. There is very little feel or emotion in their music...I think. It seems to be all practiced mechanics with little point beyond "look what I can do!!"

5th - Dime was a fantastic guitar player. I loved most of his work. He was one of the greats for sure. BUT...."solidified drop "D" tuning"? What is your meaning exaclty? There are many alternate tunings...drop D is fairly boring...but how do you figure it sounds terrible and muddy?? That statement tells me that you have very little experience with alternate tunings. A good 6 string guitar can be tuned as low as "A"..may be lower, and still sound crystal clear, tight, well defined, and punchy. it just depends on your eq settings and playing style. You can't just take a guitar and amp that's been dialed in for standard tuning and expect it to sound good in a lower tuning. There are a lot of subtle changes that need to happen, especially with how you play it.

Last - the screaming part....it depends. It really does. Some of it sucks ass....some of it is really cool. Persoanlly, I prefer the screamers who scream IN KEY, are somewhat dynamic, and can actually sing when it is called for. The monotone cookie monster sound gets boring if that's ALL a singer can do.
