Exactly. If anything killed anything it was greed killing creative freedom. But thats the case for any music. Not just metal.

exactly

and like many people have said, the whole "metal's dead" thing is bullshit - and we're not just talking about the thriving underground scene

lamb of god sold 500,000 copies of their killapelphia DVD in less than a month

the new tool album(albeit it's not METAL metal, but close enough) has sold a shitload of copies since its release

the unholy alliance tour is selling out huge arenas nationwide, and i'm sure the new slayer album will be in the billboard top 10 next week

my day job is at target, and in the last year alone the promo videos that get played in the electronics dept. have featured vids by mastodon, dillinger escape plan, as i lay dying, soulfly, and some other shitty bands i can't remember

Mariha Carey - 27,000,000 in first month
Coldplay - 12,000,000 first month
Tobie Keith - 19,000,000 first 10 days

Back in the 80's those numbers would have been reversed when metal was the mainstream of the music industries. Is metal dead, no, but it is taking a far less share of the market place.

You are missing the ENTIRE point. Whoosh. Right over your head.

If you only care about ratings and $$, persue whatever the current fad is. Jump on the band wagon and do your best to copy the current hot commodity. You already have the mentality of a sellout...might as well follow through to the end and see how you like it.

This thread was fun for a little while. But now it's just irritating.

Metal will never die. It is immortal. It will exist as long as humans are around. It is a musical representation of the dissatisfaction and unrest of humans in this society. It is one the most powerful and pure forms of cummunication. It is not dependant on commercialism, popularity, or fans. It would still exist if no one ever went to live metal concerts or bought metal cd's. What it does need in order to exist is a few people with open minds who can think for themselves and be creative without regard for what is popular or what is expected. People who can express themselves freely and without inhibition.....making music directly from the soul.

So who "killed" metal? Retards like juststartingout are trying their best because they don't know what metal is. There is an entire universe of jaw dropping, inspiring, unbelievably good metal out there, but the silly child has no clue where to even look.
Good post.

One vital word forgotten, IMO~one very important word.

AGGRESSION!
As vital in the creation as in the enjoyment of metal to me.
YMMV

last time i checked, people like madonna, michael jackson, and probably even boy george and george michael sold waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more albums than any metal band did, except for MAYBE metallica...but even then, their sales levels didn't get massive until the black album dropped

well, i take that back...i'm sure the crue sold plenty of albums, along with all those gay hair bands(which i don't really consider metal) - but again, nowhere near on the level of mainstream pop stuff

the simple fact is that metal is a NICHE form of music - it's always going to have a certain portion of the population that's drawn to it, and another portion that thinks it's shit. there's always going to be a few huge bands, a few more big ones, a bunch of in the middle ones, and a shitload of (often crappy) underground ones. to make a long story short, the music's not going anywhere, so people should stop bitching.

and then kill this topic

Is that how you decide what the next CD you're going to buy is?

"hmm, lets see now, who sold the most copies this week. Ah, its Britney. Well I guess that means she's pretty good so I'll buy her CD".

Give me a break...

The question wasn't "Does metal have a smaller share of the marketplace" or "who gave metal a smaller share of the marketplace". The question was "Who destroyed metal". No one did. You just said it yourself, its not dead. End of story, case closed.

The wording is a awkward, so maybe that's why you guys don't get the point. In the 80s metal bands were doing that kind of business. Now, not so much. That delta is what some consider its death. You can't disregard it.

Maybe metal is better now that it has gone underground. that's great. It isn't getting the exposure it once was, but you girlie-armed mascara-wearers seem to be happy with it and that's all that matters.

Aren't you embarassed for writing that? I mean, you're over 30 and you sound like you dig comic books and role-playing games. I am embarassed for you.

Ok, ok I admit it - I destroyed metal alright.
I'm sorry. I slipped.

Now can we get over it and play some jazz instead ;)

"From the bowels of the abyss comes this blasphemous offering of thunderblast beats, coupled with haunting atmospheric melodies and a churning progression of structure that reveals a nihilistic drive toward centricism in a cycle of regenerating violence and sonorous calm.

This eloquent and vast style of violent metal alternates its sweeping harmony with a disharmonious reductivism that transforms melody into motion and rhythm for regeneration in a gnostic harvest of glory and resurrection.

The light shines through darkness and vice versa in songs which turn ambitious ranting blasts in the Canadian style into atmospheres of diffused focus and paradoxical, chiastic vision. Darkly hoarse vocals in the pure black metal style accompany."

You spoiling for a fight?
How about we arm wrestle instead?

none of them it's all these shitty new bands and their subgenres.
and all these idiots screaming

well since this thread is about 'metal', maybe someone can explain the differences between all the bullshit sub-categories that seem to be so prevalent now. for example, what the fuck is 'post-metal', 'scream-metal', 'thrash-metal' or 'nu-metal'? maybe im just old fashioned, but back in the day it was just 'heavy-metal'. you either were metal or you werent. maybe it really is all these stupid sub-genres that are fucking up regular old 'metal'.

Nu metal blows and all the bands sound like extremely shitty Helmet ripoffs with lame rappers. Doom metal rules and is dominated by bands that play slow, detune, and have an extremely strong Sabbath influence. Black Metal is good too...big minor keyed classical influence...very fast as well, all those bands love ye olde Satan. Death metal is the growling shit with all the chromatic riffs and all have songs like 'rotting fetus' and 'festering wound' and all that shit. Thrash metal would be nearly 'old school' Exodus, Metallica, Anthrax and stuff that sounds similar.

And finally, Meshuggah still don't sound like anyone else. Hope that helps.

metal only died in the main stream media. ive gone to see many of those 80-s bands since the mid 90-s and many still play the big arenas like iron maiden. ive seen judas priest pack out places even without rob halford. the nu-metal bands like disturbed and 3 days grace are still doing metal in a new way dah? i even use to go see ywngwie and he would pack the large clubs.lets see vanilla ice do that!

I'm not embarrased one bit. My interpretation of what metal is, is the strongets passion I have outside of my marriage. I am not afraid to express myself about it. I am proud of it. There is no reason to be insecure about your passions. You cannot progress in your art if you feel ashmed of it.

It's probably difficult to maintain that intensity with so many people like me pointing and laughing. I'm sorry. There must be something to this metal thing.

I withdraw my previous comments about girlie-arms, mascara and role playing games. Plus cellar dwellar wants to beat me up and all 6'4" 225 #'s of me is quaking in my size 12 engineer boots.

Grrrrrrl power!

If someone pays to go and see a gig just to point and laugh then the joke's on them as far as I'm concerned.

Will someone please kill this thread....
