In my opinion Nirvana did with their bullshit grunge. Why? because closeminded teens thought it was cool and forgot about metal . Hell, they even forgot about alternative.

Your post is an example of picking the low-hanging fruit off of the cliche tree and using them as words to live by.

The "kids" did not accept Nirvana out of close-mindedness - quite the opposite. Metal, as of 1991-92, wasn't doing much in the way of being innovative or new. Grunge was something "new" (if you can truly call it new) and stepped up just as metal was floundering.

"Alternative" was never forgotten as "alternative" was never intended to be anything beyond a description of what could not get airplay, what was not classic rock and what dealt with non-standard themes (not a lot of sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, women or wine in the lyrics).

Metal, like any genre, recycles itself along the lines of reincarnation:

Metal gets popular
The money-whores come flowing in
The market becomes flooded with clones
Everything sounds the same
People get bored
The "next thing" comes along
Metal ("insert genre here") "dies"

except metal doesn't really die. It goes underground. It hides and licks its wounds. Metal resurfaces because fans, young and old, keep the flame burning. New guys (and old guys) come up with fresh or revitalized approaches to metal and then metal becomes compelling again. The money-whores have long-since forgotten metal and thus treat it like it is something "new" again.

What is the upshot? With each ascendance upon the hill of popularity, a new true metal head is born. THIS is what keeps metal alive.

SO, I think any non-metal band in your list shouldn't be on your list.

For starters (yes I'm dating myself):

I abandoned metal for prog-rock (Yes, Genesis, ELP, Kansas, etc). I know - the music was self-indulgent, but at least I really learned how to play the guitar.

The sooner you stop using hand-me-down derisive language used to describe a perfectly great genre and art-form, the sooner prog will regain respect.

Just as the Sex Pistols and punk said: "it's okay if you can't play (and yes, that IS alright);" Yes, KC, ELP and the like said: "it's okay if you CAN play" - and play they did/do.

Music fans Destroyed Metal.

Its just sad that they made all the bands out to be gay for looking the way they did and writing the music they did.

But there was a ton of inspiration to offer from those bands.

You could say the same thing about the 80's new wave.

We just move on.

But any true fan of metal should have still respected these bands for what they did.

History is still repeating itself today.

First every band had to do solos, then Solos were gay, now everybody is learning to shred again.

I think a lot of it was that the generation was lazy and couldn't play them anyway.

Now its changing.

Eddie Van Halen's Generation needed influences like Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton etc.

The 90's Generation needed Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Vai, Satriani, Malmstein and many more to get to the extremes that we are now hearing today.

Avenged Sevenfold gets radio play and they look like LA Guns and can shred on guitar.

Trivium is ripping early Metallica now but they can shred too.

Theres so many bands that are now able to do what they have been wanting to throughout the Grunge era of music fans.

I personally still think its just the fans faults for being so quick to let others Destroy early Metal.

Musicians that played then and play now probably have much more respect for those bands and could still look to early music for inspiration to play today.

Take some of these "GAY HAIR" bands and look what they gave the guitar world:

Winger: Reb Beach
White Lion: Vitto Bratta
Mr. Big: Paul Gilbert
David Lee Roth/White Snake: Steve Vai
Dokken: George Lynch
Poison: Richie Kotzen
Extreme: Nuno Bettencourt

Zakk Wylde is a macho ass kicking kinda guy today and wouldn't have any problem admitting how great any of these bands and musicians were.

I guess I am just venting.

But I would still like to strangle some Pearl Jam and Nirvana fans for their ignorance.

You know Head or Munky from Korn had Ibanez Universe and loved Steve Vai but couldn't play a solo to save their life.

I didn't know Metal died? I think it's actually gotten stronger. Maybe the question should be who ruined the IMAGE of metal? But I've seen metal expanding in all genres of it. Inlcuding Death Metal, Grindcore, Heavy Metal etc. Also I believe the metal fanbase is growing. Bad post
