Hello:
I've tried to work this out for a while, but for some reason I can't quite do it. I've been playing and writing for fourteen years, but for all of my experience and for the life of me it still stumps me.
So, hopefully someone has the answer for me.
When I play a regular Bminor chord (Not barred) on the third fret, what key am I in?
Thanks. I hope someone has the answer.
All the best,

Probably D Major. But I thought Bm was played on the second fret.

Thanks, I'm aware of that

Hi:
Thanks for answering my question. I'm aware that Bm is played on the second fret, but I was curious what key I would be in if I played on the third.

Then it's not a Bm, it's a Cm. And one chord doesn't by itself indicate key. You could be in Cm/Eb--but that same Cm can be part of other keys too (Bb, Ab). So what other chords are you playing with this one?

The chord doesn't determine the key, the key determines the chord.

btw: How do you play a Bm on the third fret?? And without barring it??

You're in the key of idiot. Stay there.

I used to enjoy the game of going up to people and looking confused and asking them "Is this the third street on the left ?".
When all is said and done, there's alot more said than done ! The OP was only asking a question and a legit one, at that......legit if you're an 18 fingered octupus, that is.

Hey!!! Can you turn it down an octave please??!?!?!??

It's the key to the universe!

As long as you're not using one of those barre chords. ;)

Yeah.....Dm makes me cry.

Wasn't he the guitarist in Jethro Tull ? Always did love Martin Dm's chording.
