ya' know ........ first I wanna say that I've watched a bunch of your vids and listened to a bunch of your songs and you're very good.
You play well, both on git and harp, and you sing well. You also have quite a knack for coming up with lyrics on the spot.
But I do believe it's a bit of an overreach to say you come up with music on the spot. Yes, technically you do but virtually all your tunes are just the blues. Hardly anything new ...... even that 'jazz' thing you did was just a swing blues.

Don't misunderstand me ..... I said you're very good and I meant it.
You have a really REALLY good one man band thing going that you should feel rightfully proud of.
But an awful lot of your tunes, musically, are much the same. You mentioned that good guitarist handling your 'unorthodox' chord changes very well and I listened closely but there's nothing even remotely unorthodox about your chord changes ...... they're simply very good, standard blues.

I know I'm gonna catch hell for this and probably shouldn't have said anything but what the hell.

Lt.Bob: I took no offense with your post and I appreciated the compliment. I have no clue what will come out of me when I start playing. To me that is making up the music. Because I am the only one doing this, there is no "box" to refer to. I suggest to people that are having doubts about what I do that they pick up their instrument and just let it flow and let the words flow out. If they can do this they realize that the music and words are unique each time. These are snapshots of time. Just like today looks sunny like yesterday, there are infinite changes that have taken place. One has to look under the surface to see these things. Most of my music is based in blues but so is most american roots music. We all are based in a style of some sort if one really has their own sound and I have my own sound. That is all I ever wished for. I use to play with Lightning Hopkins. If you listen to his records they sound simple. But being onstage with him was a whole other reality. His tempos would fluctuate and chord changes would often not stay in pattern through songs. He would also throw in breaks that were not textbook. Most musicians will have a hell of a hard time fitting in this setup. I play this way and another thing is most musicians push the beat. These little things go by most musicians. I could tell you of lots of big name musicians that sat in with me and couldn't find the groove. Whether people want to accept this or not, it is a reality that is there. Walter
 
meh, I believe that. Plenty of players can't really sit in well at all.
I could play with you easily but, in fairness, I've played with a LOT of old delta bluesmen like you described Hopkins as being back in Baton Rouge so that helps I suppose.

Anyway ..... I want to repeat that i think you're very good ..... I'm just not hearing any odd changes in there, chords or timing wise.
But you're right ..... everyone has their own style and you play a mean roots sort of blues.
 
LtBob: I hope we get to play together someday because I don't hear anything out of time going on. I can't tell you how many studio engineers and musicians have told me my songs speed up, slow down, and change chords out of the rules.

I recorded these tonight. The mood went back to the the 1970's-80's when clubs were full of dancers tearing it. I am able to travel through time. All I do is close my eyes and I am back there. I see, feel, smell, experience, it all just like it was all happening again. This one brought me back the Red Barn in Gurneville California. The place would be wall to wall hippies all smoking weed, drinking, sharing it with us, and the young women loved to braid our long hair. Those were some days! I had a real trio behind back then (guitar, bass, drums) and I just blew harp and sang. The 1 man band caught it tonight and I am so thankful to have discovered Spontobeat. ! Walter

Last night I tried to do amplified harp with the one man band. I taped 2 harp racks together and duct taped a shure 57 to one and butted it up against the harp in the second rack. I duct taped the 2 racks together (I use the cheapo $8 jimmy reed kind) and wrapped the harp in rag trying to get a cupping effect. The bassiness on the 57 picked up the vocals way too much and the vocal condensor mic picked up the acoustic harp too much. the gist is didn't like the sound. Not being able to hold the mic when amped loses the cupping effect so I decided to build my own band so I could free my hands up.

This set up reminds of the band sound that I had going during the late 70's-early 80's before I totally let go of playing amped harp and went to standing off the vocal mic. It brought back memorie of those club gigs when people got down and with you. The mix reflects the sound I remember hearing onstage as we played.

I first recorded the guitar and drums on my feet, then the keys, and last the harp. I used a shure 57, stock delta frost in C, and a stock princeton reverb reissue (with eurotubes)
If I could get a real band like this going, I would give the one man band a rest for awhile. Overdubbing is time consuming and I really don't like that it isn't totally spontaneous. I did one take on each instrument. At least that made it kind of spontobeat and like it would be when I sit in with a real band. Walter

I have been dabbling with amplifying my harp in my one band set up. Playing the drums on my feet, the harp on a rack, singing, and guitar, all at once has presented some problems with this. First I tried putting one harp rack over another one and taping a shure 57 to it and butting it up to the harp in the rack closest to my mouth. It was just too heavy and the mic cord kept banging on the guitar strings.


Walterharp on the bushman/MBH forum sent me a tiny little mic he built to try out. I hooked it up to my princeton reverb reissue (stock except eurotubes) and had to run my guitar direct into a preamp (I got to buy a vibro champ). I took an empty toilet roll and cut it open and added some paper towels to the inside. Then I duct taped it in place, fitted it over a bushman delta frost (A and also stock) and slid the tiny mic in against the harp. This added somewhat of a hand cupping effect. So off I hit the recording button and here is what I got. there is still a lot of bleeding of acoustic harp into the vocal mic and vocal into the bassed out/distorted harp amp. Also the harp mic has a buzz to it (maybe I am doing something wrong with the hook up?). All in all I think it is a good start. I may buy some of that sound deading foam they put in computers to quiet them down in recording studios inside the toilet paper roll to see if that isolates it a bit more. I was going to go to walmart today to look for one of those rubber beer can coolers. I think this will be my answer but couldn't bring myself to going to walmart. It is too depressing there for me. I have been messing with using a shure 57 and a $5 homemade tie clip mic to amplify my harp through my princeton reverb reissue amp. I started out with a toilet paper tube lined with a paper towel then tried a rubber beer can cooler. I had about given up on the beer can cooler idea because the compression on the tie clip mic was overloading it and making it cut out. The 57 worked fine but the size and weight of it was no fun and I kind of like the cheap mic sound better. It is different than the norm as am I :-).



Today I took the beer cooler idea and added a big hole in the bottom so air can escape. then I lined it with a paper towel. It all fit together in rack easily and I dig the sound. It is not noticably heavier than with just a harp in the rack. the tie clip mic is encased in a pen top. I used the clip on the pen to hold it on the beer can cooler via sliting the cooler and running the pen top through it. Here are my first attempts with this new set up. Walter
