U87 and Preamp question

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for any help, this is such a good place to find out new info

I recently tested a few mic's for my vox and came up with the Neumann U87 as the best for me (It was an old U87 the studio had)

Anyhow my dilema is to buy a new (U87 AI) or Vintage one and whether I would hear a big difference between the two

I am concerned a "vintage" one is such an unknown quantity purchase but that a new one wont sound like the studio tests

Next problem of course is what pre-amp should I get <bearing in mind I have 2 x KM 184's also for acoustic guitar> that I will also need to run

I have been considering the Langevin Dual Vox any comments greatly appreciated

I have the dual vocal combo, I love it. The compressor is great on guitar and vocal. (don't go over board on the comp for vocal) It is very clean and round.
If you want more color, try an amek 9098 dual pre. This is also exellent, just different. The amek seems to add beef to things.

Huge difference in mics (you should definitely try a new 87 before u buy)

What style of music are you recording? What is your experience level? Budget? I could throw out a suggestion like a SLAM! or Flamingo it may not be best tool for you application.

So give us some more info so we can answer intelligently.

Oh and if you're turned on to a U87, you may want to test out a Gefell UMT70 or Soundelux U195... fwiw.

A bit more info is I am recording accoustic guitar and vox into a Digi 002, Budget wise I have up to 2.5 / 3K K to throw at this and a Mic,

I am conscious my room accoustics are a big limiting factor too so don't want to go overboard but at the same time don't want ot wish I had spent that extra £500.00!

Also as it's a home studio I was hoping for something I can do a bit of poor mans mastering through as well maybe

I know it's a lot of cash but I figure this is the most important stage of the whole deal - Yes???
