The "Spirit of 47" project

phil, this is spectacular looking work! the whole time checking out those pictures two things went through my head:

1. damn, this is inspiring! how could one NOT put down a great performance in front of something like that? and

2. man, i wish my soldering were that neat. that's some clean lookin work. nicely done!

tip for the "fresh coat of paint"......maybe just buff it nice and polished.

(or if you're feeling "spirit of st louis" and "spirit of '76" inspired, maybe something in red, white and blue. )

of course, the labor "charge" is the kicker here......how many hours went into it, would you say?

again, nicely done! wish you were near here, b/c i'd love to hear it first-hand.

Total mental time thinking about the circuit was days. Choice of transformer: days. There was so much research it was ridiculous.

I was trying to get another BV8 transformer, but Lundahl gets such high praise for their quality that I just decided "F it" and got one of theirs instead of trying to acheive the U47's transformer sound. Plus, Cinemag has an OEM source that's hogging all their U47 transformers. I think the Lundahl sounds fantastic! It also solders directly to the board, so that was a big plus.

I spent hours in the evening in Photoshop doing the PC board layout. I worked on it for weeks a bit at a time.

Full assembly time took a while too. I had to etch the boards (wish I had a better system for that!) Then drill it on the press, wire it and measure everything's voltages with a dummy capacitor to substitute for the capsule. I'd say assembly time including etching was 10 hours. That's being generous though. Now that all the major thinking is done I could whip one up in about 4-5 hours.

CM-2461NiCo. Like I said, though, they have an OEM source that's gobbling them up and won't have any more for a while.

I really don't think it would be fair to reveal that. The guy I got them from makes a living building and selling microphones and he sold me the capsule as a favor. I don't want to all of a sudden have him get bombarded with requests just for capsules. He needs to be able to sell mics. The Peluso PK47 is very close in sound. I have it in a different mic, but if it were in this mic it would sound the same I'm sure. That's the one I'd recommend as a substitute.

Actually, I'm more concerned about the mount, becuase I've got an M7 style capsule built by a member at the Prodigy Pro forum. The mount you used looked sturdy.

I'm not sure this would fit in a V67 body. Maybe you should do the Royer mod for that.

Will is sound as good? That's relative on taste.

Will it sound the same as the circuit used here? No. They are a bit different. Mine is closer in design to the U47, but with some changes.

I have a layout for Royer PCBs.

I own a Royer mod V67. Thing sounds great. After they use it singers usually look to see the model number of the mic. I just tell them it's a V67 on steroids.
As a matter of fact I bought this mic from Koji. I think he said that Phil here changed the capsule to the 367 from the original mod. A very sweet mic.

that awsem. im just torn between which capsule to buy. i originally thought the 367 as i thought it was the ebst one. now theres the pk47 and 67. sigh. haha. yer. stilll gotta work out i guess if i want a u47 sound or a 67 sound. thanks for the feedback ont he mod though. gives me confidance
