The New Tone Thread

No, I haven't put together a CD in a few years. I figure that market is finished. I probably have enough new material for at least 2 CD's. Maybe I should take what I think is the best stuff and put together a CD and throw it up on CDBABY. Why? No reason. Not as if anyone buys music any more. But I do enjoy playing "fantasy rock star" and designing CD covers, art work, etc....Just for the fun of it. Maybe I'll do it, but every time I say to myself that I'll stop recording new shit, I have a new riff or song in my head and I HAVE to work on it.

I'm the same way. I have a new album completely finished that I just haven't done anything with. Another about 75% there, and another mostly in demo phase. I write em, I play em, I record em, and then do nothing with them anymore because it just doesn't matter.

Yeah, It looks like the days of selling CD's are over with for the most part.
I will be too old to play anything by the time I learn how to record and mix worth a shit....so I was never in the "record a cd and sell it" game anyway.
Well, my jingle is getting a lot of radio play!
It's just a corny jingle but it's still pretty cool to turn on the radio and hear something I'm playing on and that I recorded in my little joke of a studio on mainstream FM rock radio.
My final mix translates very well in every system I've played it in so I'm pretty happy with it.

since I have always played music for the sake of playing music, I'm in good shape ..... nothing has changed.

I enjoy the playing .... never did care about fame or 'making it' .... actually, if I had I'd surely be somewhere of note right now ..... almost did anyway despite my indifference.

But now ...... I'm ahead of the game ..... don't care that no one buys CDs since I never was gonna try to sell one anyways.

I'll almost surely do one in the next year or so but it'll be mainly for me .... ya'll I guess ...... some friends .... just the doing of it will be the point.

Here's another clip of the EVH LBX 15 watter...I used the 1/4 power mode for this clip, switching from the blue channel to the red, & increasing the volume as I went along. This just basically shows the little amp's power tube saturation as it's pushed a little more...

Honestly, there's not a lot of difference in volume between the 1/4 & full power mode, it just saturates the power section a little faster IMO...

Signal chain:

SG > EVH 15w > Greenback > i5 (no post-processing at all, raw tracks)

Amp settings:
1/4 power mode
Resonance: 2-3
Bass: 7-8
Mid: 3
Treble: 6
Presence: 7
Gain: 3
Volume: 2, 4 (starts @ 0:53), 5 (starts @ 1:24), 7 (starts @ 2:06)

The clip starts on the blue channel, then switches to the red, increasing the volume for each little section...

EVH Low Power

The red channel not only has more gain, it's voiced a little different, it seems like the high end is a little more pronounced to me...

Overall, I like this little amp, a lot. It's a lot different from any amp I've had before, & is well suited for the type of tones that I go for most of the time. The volume reminds me of an old-school amp, once you hit about "2" on the dial, it's already about as loud as it'll get, it just saturates more as you turn it up...

I grew up listening to albums, so I like to aggregate my stuff in album form. Once I'm gone the world will get my genius and come looking for all of it.

That is better than your last clips for sure. That sounds like it has it's own character. Pretty cool. The channel differences are really most apparent to me with the lower volumes. The gainy channel seems a little scooped and brighter. As the volume goes up the two channels get more and more similar. That thing has a crazy amount of gain! It's a little bit fizzy to me, but that might just be mic placement. The Greenback adds a nice crunch and tight low end to it. Pump it through some other speakers next. I bet it sounds killer through the G12-65.

Hey dudes. thanks for the responses. I know i am not here much but the input is definitely appreciated. I don't want to abuse the tone thread at all. But am i ever glad it is here when i need you turkeys.

I am not in love with the flub. I sort of uncertain as to what the culprit is? I am hesitant to move the mic around but i have a sneaking suspicion that that is what the answer might have to be. Could it also be the strings? They are as dead as door nails. They haven't been changed on that guitar since after Christmas? Zero brightness at all. Maybe the P90's? Maybe just the orange cab. I know they have characteristic sound to them generally speaking? I don't know.

Any offerings as to how to tighten that up a little bit? I am thinking of just using a different guitar with fresh strings on it next time i track. Which will be any number of weeks from now as i head back to prison this afternoon :(

Yes that song will have vocals and bass for sure if there is anything i have an abundance of in the evenings where i am working it is time to sit and dream up shit for my music projects. Lyrics ideas, melodies and what have you. So it has been a good thing in that respect. The more i listen to the other stuff i have laying around the more stoked i am on finishing these turds.

@Minerdude: I liked the Volume 7 one best it just had a nice bite and lended a better feel to the riff you were playing. and treated my ears a bit more nicely than the 3 or the 5. 7 was the shining star in that situation. Also i don't know that the dimed link works for me in Canada it seems to take me to the volume 7 one again ?? So i am not sure if it is the right sample i should be hearing?

@Rami: That monkey song is cool as hell man. I like the intro it has such a cool vibe to it. and like anything i have ever heard from you the performance is razor sharp. I can really not offer much in the way of a critique there. The guitars are sitting in there really great. You found a brilliant mix of tone and home for them? After a third listen i still can find anything to comment on other than it is still awesome. And the subject matter i can really sympathize with. Good work man.

Thanks Greg, this little amp is killer IMO, especially for being only 15w. I'm really happy with it, as I can get some pretty good tones without blowing the windows out of the house. Of course, it doesn't compare to the big amps I had before in sheer power, but like you said, it's got it's own thing goin' on, & I like it, a lot...

It does have a crazy amount of gain, I can't see ever having the gain past 4-5 on the red channel. Seems to be a good little amp, & I'm satisfied with it so far...

I'll post some more clips in a little while dude, using different speakers...

man ..... I'm liking what I'm hearing from the EVH ..... I hate Eddie but his namesake amp's pretty cool!

It could be all of that. It could be in your muting technique. It could be the amp. I don't think it's bad enough to worry about, but a string change sure wouldn't hurt! I wouldn't blame it on the P-90s though. Those pickups rule!

Here's some jacking around I did earlier. No real reason other than making noise with the delay pedal.

Gibson Les Paul Custom
Marshall JVM410H - OD1 channel - Orange mode
Resonance - 0
Presence - 4
Bass - 5
Mid - 7
Treb - 4
Gain - 2
Ch vol - 5
Master Vol - 7
TC Electronic Flashback Delay in fx loop - analog mode
Marshall 1960B 4x12 - Vintage 30
SM57 on axis, on grill, halfway to edge
No FX or plug-ins in DAW

Too Much Delay And I Kind of Like It

See what you think of this directionless mess.

See what you think of this directionless mess.

I like it. Delay has its' place, and this is the type of thing it sounds good with.

Plus, you can't go wrong when you start a clip with Son of Epic Pick Slide. :D

Haha, Thanks Rami. Son of Epic Pick Slide! :D

That old pickslide I did was pretty epic.

That's my best trick. Some people play fast, some people play with feel, some people legato, arpeggio, staccato....I don't do any of that. I scrape the pick against the strings like a boss. :o:p:facepalm:

Shan: Thanks man, not sure I fucked the links up, but it's possible. I usually run through 'em to make sure they're right before I post...Maybe I did fuck it up...hahaha...Thanks again dude...

Bob: Thanks man, I'm liking the little EVH amp a lot over here. It's a little monster...

Greg: Clip sounds pretty good dude, I'm a big fan of effects, & they can add a lot to your guitar tones dude. IMO you need to use 'em more often...

Be back in a few with some more clips of the little 15w amp....

Ok, here are some more clips using different speakers. I will admit I didn't spend much time on the mic placement, I just stuck it close to the little dot on my grill cloth (that marks about the center of the speakers) & went with it...I'm sure with some time, I could dial these in a lot better, & my playing is pretty terrible on these...

These are pretty low volume clips too, the amp was on "2" for all of 'em...

SG > EVH 15w > Bastard 4x12 > i5 (no post-processing at all, raw tracks)

Amp settings:
1/4 power mode
Resonance: 2-3
Bass: 7-8
Mid: 3
Treble: 6
Presence: 7
Gain: 3
Volume: 2

EVH > G12H > i5

EVH > V30 > i5

EVH > G12-65 > i5

Like the previous clips, I started on the blue channel, then switch to the red. I didn't change anything else in these clips though, all the amp settings are identical, only the speaker is different...

You can definitely tell when I switch to the red channel, it's got more high-end & is a lot dirtier....

I still think the Greenback is the best match for this amp, but the '65 IMO is a close second. The G12H & V30 both have their own thing goin' on too, so I've still got plenty of options for different tones...

Man I think those sound pretty great. I really like the G12H and V30 myself. Nice and raw in the mids. Those two speakers do the high gain channel better IMO.

Thanks Greg, maybe I've stumbled onto something here. I've always wanted to get good recorded guitar tones at lower volumes, & this little amp seems to be doing just that. I'm pretty happy with this little amp dude...

Do you have any experience with the EVH cabs??? I can get a 4x12 with the EVH branded Greenbacks for about $600 locally. The only thing I don't like is that the cab is white...

$600-sh for basically a brand new cab, is this a deal or not??? I can probably talk the guy down a little too....Lemme know...

Check the specs on those EVH Greenbacks. They may be only 20 watts each. Standard GBs are 25 watts. 20w Greenbacks are no problem for your little amp, but when you go big again, it could potentially be an issue.

But yeah, 600 for a used Greenback cab is a pretty good deal. Not great, but pretty good.
