By the way guys, I did a pretty major mod to my Custom. There was this one serious thing that was bothering me, and it had to be addressed. I thought about bringing it to a luthier because this mod is heavy duty stuff, but I did some research and decided to tackle it myself, and I was able to do it, just barely.

Ok, here are some more clips using different speakers. I will admit I didn't spend much time on the mic placement, I just stuck it close to the little dot on my grill cloth (that marks about the center of the speakers) & went with it...I'm sure with some time, I could dial these in a lot better, & my playing is pretty terrible on these...

These are pretty low volume clips too, the amp was on "2" for all of 'em...

SG > EVH 15w > Bastard 4x12 > i5 (no post-processing at all, raw tracks)

Amp settings:
1/4 power mode
Resonance: 2-3
Bass: 7-8
Mid: 3
Treble: 6
Presence: 7
Gain: 3
Volume: 2

EVH > G12H > i5

EVH > V30 > i5

EVH > G12-65 > i5

Like the previous clips, I started on the blue channel, then switch to the red. I didn't change anything else in these clips though, all the amp settings are identical, only the speaker is different...

You can definitely tell when I switch to the red channel, it's got more high-end & is a lot dirtier....

I still think the Greenback is the best match for this amp, but the '65 IMO is a close second. The G12H & V30 both have their own thing goin' on too, so I've still got plenty of options for different tones...

It's no Chupa but for a little amp it sounds pretty good.

Hahaha, fine job man. It's a good thing that you were confident in your modification, since that's pretty much irreversible.

Damn, I'm so far behind in tones, it's gonna take me a week to listen to everything that's happened here in the last week. Greg with a new guitar, Miner with a new amp, RFR with a Plexi, Rami with a new song, Lt. Bob with a song, JDOD with...um...dammit I've already forgotten what all happened here lately. I'll catch up at some point.

Check the specs on those EVH Greenbacks. They may be only 20 watts each. Standard GBs are 25 watts. 20w Greenbacks are no problem for your little amp, but when you go big again, it could potentially be an issue.

But yeah, 600 for a used Greenback cab is a pretty good deal. Not great, but pretty good.

From what I can find about these speakers, the general consensus is they're the same as the Heritage, & the Greenbacks that Marshall puts in the Vintage Modern cabs, with a different label..., they're Heritage Greenbacks with a different label. I even looked 'em up on Celestion's site, & the specs are the same...

I'm gonna think on it for a day or two, the guy is wanting a couple things I've got here, & I may end up trading...

Ocnor: Thanks man, you know that's weird you mention the Chupa. I'd been thinking this amp has some of the same character the Chupa's got, it's just got a little set of nuts when you compare 'em...

those top hats look cool.

Cool man!! Can I jump in here and ask a question? I have a 76 LP Custom. Maple neck.....rosewood fret board. That has always been my favorite neck by far and I've played tons of guitars. I've looked all over trying to find the specs for the neck. So many various different answers. Where can I find the specs for this neck?

What kind of specs do you need? And you sure that fretboard isn't ebony?

Yes....as a matter of fact you're right. It is ebony. Just looking for the radius really. So many different specs for those years (the 70's) and the maple neck specs seems to be a mystery for some reason. That is one awesome neck.

I think the radius is 12", no? Just like every other Les Paul since the beginning of time? Gibson will finagle the neck profiles, but the fretboard radius is always 12 as far as I know.

When I play some other Les Pauls...........especially newer ones.........they feel very different. I guess the neck profiles are the main reason. What can you tell me about why they finagled them? Are the 70's models profiles very different from the newer ones? (the necks I mean)

Customs naturally feel different from other Les Pauls because of the ebony and flattened frets. That's just the nature of Customs. If you're used to a Custom and play a "regular" guitar, the regular guitar's frets will feel gigantic. And vice versa. A Custom's frets feel like nothing compared to jumbo fretted regular guitars.

But yeah, Gibson's 70s necks are generally a hybrid of 50s and 60s profiles. They're pretty slim at the nut end with a volute and get beefier at the heel. The contour into the heel also starts sooner on 70s necks. Very modern Les Pauls can have a variety of profiles depending on the model.

That's one of the best general explanations about LP necks I've ever read. Thanks for that Greg. Having picked up 1000's of guitars in my time.........I've yet to find one like my 76. I always said if i ever found another neck like that I'd buy the guitar it was attached to. So far.......no luck. I've shown my LP here before but here it is again. 1976 LP Mick.webp

Thanks guys.............it's 40 years old this year. Where has the frickin' time gone man. I remember walking into GC in Los Angeles and buying it new...............or was it Sam Ash??? Holy crap my mind is gone!!!

I spent the biggest part of my day haggling a buddy of mine over a 4x12 cab. I kept pestering him about it, & ended up getting it without spending a dime, like the little EVH head, I traded some shit that I never use for it...Just guessing at the value of the things I traded to him, I got this cab for about $500. I think I did ok on the trade, I wish it'd been black tolex, but I can't really bitch because of the way I got it...Here's a couple pics:

Dunno if you can see in the bottom pic or not, but the speaker wires are soldered on, they don't even have the little tabs like most speakers do. The cab looks brand new, not a mark on it anywhere. I don't think the speakers are even broken in, the guy I got it from said he'd had it a couple months or so...

Clips to come...

Lol Goddamn dude! You act fast. Nice score. Looks great. :)

For what it's worth, ALL of the wires going to all of the speakers in all of my cabs are soldered. No push on flimsy clips for me.

Now quit fucking around and stack those cabs. :D

Thanks man, the guy was gonna get rid of it no matter what, so I pestered the fuck out of him about it. Long story short, I traded some shit I've had for years for the cab. I know I had a lot more $$$ in all that stuff, but I never use any of it anymore, & I'll use this cab a lot more than I ever used any of the stuff I traded...

This fucker is heavy, dunno what the difference between this & my bastard cab, but it seems like it weighs a lot more...

Life sure is strange for me anymore dude. One day I'm scratching/clawing trying to survive, & the next I've got all kinds of new toys...

I'll post some clips in a little while, so far it sounds pretty damn good with the 15w head...:)

Ok guys, here's a clip using the new (to me) cab...

Signal chain:

SG>EVH LBX>EVH 4x12>i5 (raw track, no post-processing)

Amp settings:
1/4 power
Red channel
Resonance: 2-3
Bass: 8
Mid: 4
Treble: 6
Presence: 7
Gain: 3
Volume: 2

EVH Half-Stack

I honestly thought there would be a big difference in the sound compared to my other cab because of the 4 different speakers that are in the bastard cab, but really, they sound pretty similar in the room...

And here's another clip with the gain dimed on the blue channel...

Signal chain:

SG>EVH LBX>EVH 4x12>i5 (raw track, no post-processing)

Amp settings:
1/4 power
Blue channel
Resonance: 2-3
Bass: 8
Mid: 4
Treble: 6
Presence: 7
Gain: 10
Volume: 2

EVH Dimed Blue Channel
