Nice floor, the dark trim adds alot. I would personally folllow-up with darker wainscoting, then maroon paint....CLASSY!

i dunno about the wainscoting, looks expensive to me. i'm tryin to save money for gear! :D

unless wainscoting has superior acoustic properties? it does look pretty sweet though, but my budget is super tight right now, i think i'm down to my last couple hundred bucks.    :(

Ha ha, I understand that....

I've just been day-dreaming about a dark wood and marooon studio with dimmer spot-cans and black acoustic panelling. Yum!

hehe yeah that would be sweet. i'm kinda thinkin now that i shoulda just done the whole floor in that darker wood i used for the border....too late now!!

i think i'm gonna go with black cloth to cover my traps and panels, i want to keep the room pretty dark.

now I notice the sub floor...duh.

also, I cannot attest to the effectiveness and the amount of the wood/adhesive/subfloor decoupling. but, you have indeed put that principle into place.

keep the pictures rolling, I'm very interested in these projects. :D

ok since it's been a couple days w/o an update, here's one last pic of the completely finished and trimmed floor. the pic came out kind of shitty cuz of the lighting, but you get the idea. i tried to shine up the floor real nice the other day and it came out lookin pretty decent. this is about the best angle i could get to show most of the room's floor.

as for the studio, i'm still waiting on my mineral wool to arrive at SPI so i can go pick it up. i'll probably call them tomorrow to check on the status. then my mom is actually gonna make me some very thick curtains for the windows for free, which is awesome. then with the last gasps of my budget, i'll spring for the 1x4's to frame the bass traps and some cloth to cover em. once it's all in place, i hope to have a decent sounding room and start making some kick ass recordings! shit i still need some furniture to break up the walls though, i wanna get like a bookcase to put all my music books and magazines in, and something cool i can use for a mic locker and other storage. and maybe a nice rug for the entry way...and something to set the drums on....shit! i'm more broke than i thought... :o

stay tuned! :D

Hey man I was just looking at this old post http://www.homerecording.net/bbs/showthread.php?t=29431
And if you used his idea on floating the floor you could make a cheap little platform to set your drum kit on. Just cover it with carpet or something to make it look nice.

the plan at this point is to treat the cieling, and make bass traps. i bought enough 4" 6lb density mineral wool to trap the corners, and enough 2" 4lb to do the ceiling. since it is a "suspended" ceiling like you'd find in an office building or something, i'm going to actually replace half of the ceiling tiles with sheets of the 2" mineral wool in a checkerboard pattern which will act like clouds in my case. luckily for me, the ceiling tiles are 2'x4' which is the same size as the mineral wool sheets, so i won't have to do much trimming except for the ones on the edges of the room. this should balance out the reflections coming from the floor i'm hoping. also, i should have enough extra 2" to make a couple small panel traps for now. we'll see how far i can stretch it. also i have 24 1'x1' squares of 2" Auralex pyramid foam that i bought several years ago that i'll probably use for now for spot treatment until i can make some more broadband absorbers. but with just the stuff i'll be putting in now, it should be a major improvement (i'm hoping!!). :)

Just out of curiousity how much did those wood floors set you back?
Do you have any plans to paint the walls?

Looking real nice so far, I love the floors.

hey everyone, here's an update on my studio. i moved most of my stuff in here over the weekend so the studio is starting to look more like a studio than an empty room. i'm still waiting for my dear mother to make me some curtains to cover the awful looking minblinds but that should happen soon. i put a bookshelf on the long wall to act as a makeshift diffusor haha ;) . my cousin brought his drum set up today and we tried recording it real quick up here and it came out OK considering the room is completely untreated and i just sorta eyeballed the mic placement. i'll post the clip in the MP3 section. i wish i would have taken some pictures of the room before we put the drums in, but here's a pic with the kit set up and mic'ed.

to be continued...

Nice progress, Zed. Keep up that pace and you'll be recording in no time. It's probably time now to get your bass traps constructed and installed. They're going to take up some serious room, so you'll be better off getting them situated before you try to make too many more decisions about placement of your instruments and other gear.

P.s.

And isn't it just amazing how fast a room that once looked so big can suddenly look so small?

hehe yeah, but it feels bigger in person than it looks in the pics. theres still about 4 feet from the drum throne to the back wall of the room, and about 4 feet from the drums to the desk, but the room just feels very narrow. but ont he drum recording it doesn't really sound like a small room, just very bright because there's no absorbtion at all. i left room in the corners for bass traps so they should fit right in, they'll probably make the desk area look better too because it will fill in the gaps in the corners behind the desk. plus i think once the ceiling gets treated, the room will sound great. we can already hear the potential compared to the room we used to have the drums in. thanks for the compliments!

here's a couple random pics of the studio, starting with a view of my bookshelf diffusors, lol :p i still haven't brought all my books over so they will look more full later...
and yeah our OH mics were a little too high :o

PS my hihats are the ones on closeup, the ones off to the side are my cousin's Quick Beats.

Lookin' nice Zed. When I can get off my lazy bum....(well actually I'm re-mixing some rap and hip-hop instrumentals that I made so that I can set up a website to sell them), I'll take some pics of my small yet meager setup....since I use software, luckily I don't need a lot of acoustics to make the room...until I decide to record in there.

Looking great zed. Would I could own that. I'm sixteen, maybe it will come in the futher when I have enough money :)

Have fun with your studio

i'll have some more pics next week once my acoustic panels come in from ATS. i can't wait! :D

oh and earlier in this thread i had mentioned buying a bunch of fiberglass from SPI, well i put in my order, then they took 2 weeks and never received it, and told me it would be like another month until their next shipment, so i canceled that shit.
