Old 1971 Les Paul Studio bass. Very few were sold. The only one I've ever seen belongs to my brother- Great bass, especially for recording.-Richie

I have a Fender Precision with flats (for thump), a Fender fretless Jazz with light gauge rounds (for mwah), plus an on-order G&L L1500 with rounds for grind.

My very first post on this board.

welcome to the society!!

Right now my favorite is an older Ibanez Soundgear. I bought it used but when I plugged it in, it sounded better than all of my other ones. I played a Jazz bass at Guitar Dipshit Center and I loved the sound. I just ordered my Geddy Lee Jazz bass on line so I'm thinking that when it comes, I might have a new favorite.

Whichever one that I'm playing at any given time is my favorite. :)

frank_1, you ask which bass sounds better on recordings, but I seemed to have missed the part where you describe the type of stuff you're going to be doing. Different bass tones are going to sound better with some styles than others. There are some songs I do where a Jazz Bass sounds better, and then there are those where a P-Bass sounds better. Think of some of your favorite bass tones and see what was used, then go and try out some basses. I agree with whoever said buy with your ears and hands and not with your eyes. I mean, a good looking bass is nice to have, but if it sounds and plays great, eff the finish. I wish my P-Bass was some other color other than sunburst, but man, I wouldn't trade the feel or the tone just to have some other color.

All that said, I toggle between a late 90's Fender MIM Jazz bass (the Taco-Jazz) in which I put Fender 60's reissue pickups and a mid-80's MIJ Fender Precision Bass (original pickups).

I love my Warwick Corvette jazzman FNA 5-string.....matches my C3 Chevy Corvette :) I also have a Soundgear 5-string....it plays decent, but when recording the bottom drops out.

Ricks are wonderful too.

Not only Paul McCartney, but also Geddy Lee plays this
magnificently funky bass. It holds second only to my Fender
Jazz.

Paul Goddard also played a 4001 with 'Atlanta Rhythm Section' and created one of the most famous Rock bass solos with it on their hit song 'Champagne Jam'.

i've never played one before, but i hear wal basses are pretty good. expensive, but nice.

In reference to Wal basses - I have played them. The only basses I like better than Wal are Modulus. The Wal sound is earthy, woody, loose, and very organic IMO. They sound GREAT in rock, blues, country, and jazz. While Wal is light years ahead of Fender, Rick, or any other choice on the list (IMO), you will pay out the nose to get one.

The Modulus bass sound is BIG, and a few descriptive words apply to almost all Modulus basses. Balanced, defined, clear, tight, punchy, growly, full, precise, and above all.....FLEXIBLE. I use a Quantum 5 with 18 volt Bartolini's and the sounds available are vast and are limited only by your own imagiantion. The Graphite neck is incredible, and makes you a better player because it is VERY unforgiving. Any half-assed notes or near misses will buzz loudly. Even so, I've never played nor heard a better bass than a Modulus Quantum 5 with the 18 volt Bartolini's.

Paul was also an avid Precision player. A bit more comfortable, warm, and still punchy, but not as much brass in the tone.

I love my new (to me ) Alembic 5 string bass. It's got tone for days and it plays like buttah.

It would have to be my...

1985 Ibanez Roadstar II, RB-850. ;)
