ROTFLMAO!!! :D:D:D

Goes right along with the Le Tripod Campchair I use at the desk. :p

That...was...funny. Dave, don't you also use Le Pillowcase? I've had good luck with those. :)

I...

I use a lot of Le Foam on Le Mixer not as a cover, but primarily to Le Doublestack Le'quipment!;)

(sometimes to triplestack gear,... I know,... that's sheer decadence!):eek:;)

I thought the foam was to keep Le Kids from getting Le Contusions when getting too roudy...

I use the premium and custom Le Trashbag covered with Le Towel!;)

...yeah, me too but I may be due for a change...;)

Still, Dave, I can just imagine how much money you'd have to invest, in 'Le Covers', for your huge inventory of machines!:D;)

The 01X is being de-throned...

After 4 years my Yamaha 01X 24 x 2 x 2 digital mixer/DAW interface/control surface is being de-throned as the hub of my studio. The M-520 is steppin' up. Its new and scary since the M-520 is still mostly laden with scratchy pots and switches, but oh well. I 'm at a point where I need the hands-on flexibility and features of a real board. This means a lot of rewiring...snakes are everywhere...its putting my knowledge of the M-520 to the test buts its a good thing...I ask myself many questions about how I will now accomplish this or that...the answers are all there, they just get me to look at the manual to find them answers. This will take few days...

SO I have a question about mixing down and tracking through the m-520. What is the routing I need to set up? I have refered to the manual and havnt realy figured out how exactly to take 16 tracks of audio and mixthem down to 2 tracks while still keeping my busses intact for things like buss compression and whatever else I need to do. So far the manual has helped a bit, but i still need some answers. Any tascam wisdom here would be appreciated.

thanks

Can you clarify this? What routing are you trying to avoid disturbing? What needs to be kept 'intact' related to your busses (I'm assuming you are talking about the PGM groups)?

Got you beat....

So I've got my 520 in the center of my studio for the last week or so. It currently hooks up to:

the MS16, a 38, a 34, a BR-20 and a CDRW-5000.

Oh yes, there is a cassette deck (an Akai) and a Teac X10r for 3 3/4 ips capability.

Plus a Roland D110 and (sometime soon) a modular synth I'm putting together.

The usual outboard gear is there ready to be patched in. I guess the key here is the 2 Teac PB64 patch bays and a lot of Hosa snakes.

I can patch in stand alone preamps and whatnot....

(Sorry I could not help myself.....)

Oh yea the carver cdplayer and teac receiver.....now what else have I forgotten....

THAT puts the M-520 into perspective, Ethan!:cool:

That is a lot of sources!

Alright then...you got me. :)

I am mainly trying to figure out how to get all 16 tracks to a master fader. I am kind of confuzed how the whole 17 18 19 20 routing thing is supposed to be used in your traditional multitrack scenario. Could you explin the group outs and how they are used, sorry if this sounds like a noob question I am just a tad bit confzed about the outing of this board. Maybe if you could tell me how your signal is flowing from the source to the multi track to the console to the 2 track. I am aiming to set up your basic flow..IE tape in to master fader to 2 track, i jsut cant seem to figure that out...

thanks for any help

Tascam consoles usually have 2 output jacks per program buss. When feeding a 16 track, the connections will be:
Buss 1 to Tracks 1 & 9
Buss 2 to Tracks 2 & 10
Buss 3 to Tracks 3 & 11
Buss 4 to Tracks 4 & 12
Buss 5 to Tracks 5 & 13
Buss 6 to Tracks 6 & 14
Buss 7 to Tracks 7 & 15
Buss 8 to Tracks 8 & 16

The above arrangement only allows you to record up to 8 tracks at a time. You need to use at least some of the direct outs to increase the "at one time" track count.

On remix, assign all tracks to the stereo buss or whatever pair of busses you are using to mix through.

A little more info

Ditto the above post.....

16 tracks from deck go into ch 1 through 16 tape inputs. These can be assigned to one or more of the 8 busses as well as to the monitor section.

Monitor input select TAPE - set level and pan to be left or right or somewhere in between for each of the 16 tape input channels. Select MON on the monitor select switches. The monitor select switches feed Stereo Master A and B. Hook your 2 track up to one of the Stereo Master outputs and adjust the Stereo Master fader for the proper level.

Make sure that you do not have 2TR A (or B if you are using St Mastr B) selected so as to avoid a feedback loop if you have source selected onthe deck.

I send STEREO Master A to the control room amp and speakers and send Stereo Master B to the BR-20 2 track deck and the CDRW-5000 CD burner. This lets me hear the final mix as well as send it to tape or cd.

This also allows making the master to 2 track and then dubbing 2 track to cd.

2 track to repro, Monitor Select to 2TR B (in my case) - adjust Stereo Master B for desired level - CDRW-5000 to record. Adjust Stereo Master A for easy listening level.

I should note that I have all my faders and level controls set (in general) to give 0 VU (-18 dBFS) when a -10 dBV signal is input to the board....

Hope this helps. (Have you got the manual?)

Regards, Ethan

Just got a custom desk built today for the new board. Here are some pics of the set up. I havnt racked anything yet, but hen I do I will have 24 spaces built right in. My friend who built the desk also surprised me with a pretty rad/convienient mic compartment. The 520 pictured is the one I jsut picked up for the low price of 202$!!!

I have been racking (no pun there) my brain on a desk to build and there it is.
I wish I could be that creative.
That is a nice looking set up there Brian. :)
Now I just need to get the energy up to do it.

Wait a minute is that the mixer I was suppose to have?

Wow!

Excellent job on the desk! Beautiful!

Is that one of those bargain basement piece-o-crap $200 mixers?

Heh, kidding.

Nice work!;)

Say if you are recording onto a computer, and you are using the 520, how could you get each different channel as a different instrument onto the computer?

Is there a way to go right from the 520 to the computer?

the best way would be to use the direct outs on each channe, but you also have to have an audio interface for the computer to convert the multiple channels to digital. For intance I use a Yamaha 01X with an i88x and a Presonus Digimax FS that can get up to 24 channelsinto the computer at a time. If you want to monitor your mix you can assign channels to PGM groups or use the AUX busses sitched to post-fader and then route to accordingly to the monitor mixer and the MONITOR SELECT switchrack.

Direct out from the 520 to a line in of your computer interface. The more inputs the interface has, the more individual channels you can send at one time to it.

I...

I generally prefer the idea of using the PGM BUSS OUTs to interface to the 'puter, which limits you to 8-simul, but that's usually enough for a midsized arrangement. Anything over what fits on 8-buss could be hooked by Direct-Outs.

That's my preference. YMMV.;)
