Getting ready to recap the PSU and...

I'm trolling for any opinions on my replacement cap selections. Please check out post #66 here and lemme have it!:rolleyes::D

Okay...I've run out of patience...

I uploaded photos to Photobucket per cjacek's advisement (thanks Daniel :)) to share with you...tired of waiting for tech support to iron out issues with my ftp site...

Here are the pictures of the M-520 all cleaned up and put back together before I moved it into the control room.

Sweet Beats,
Beautiful job guy ! You done good :) Hey if I may ask what is that Tascam gear underneath the 520 and in the other rack is that some Tascam line mixers I see ? Good luck with the 520 !! Best Regards, Dave

CORY!!!! That's BEAUTIFUL! WOW!!!! So clean, a museum piece! Are you sure it's not new? :D;)
:):):):):):):):)

Thanks for the positive comments guys! :)

Daniel, video would show the LED's still flickering on several of the channel strips that have not been given the DeoxIT treatment...don't think that feature was there when new...but the still shots look good.:D:D:D Hey, consider its appearance the result of inspiration stemming from the condition of your 48! ;)

I just feel good having it out of the less climate controlled area outside the "control room" as the autumn weather approaches...a burden lifted. Its clean, its in a controlled space and I can leisurely clean up the internals as time permits or a project demands.

Dave (Hilltop Studios)! How are you? MS-16, right? How is it running these days?

The Tascam gear under the 520 is an RS-20B. Aside from my 58 and 48 decks, it was really the tipping point that got me going on snatching up more good deals on these well-built examples from the 80's era Tascam line. The RS-20B is a dual-spring stereo (read 4 springs) reverb unit with built-in HPF and limiter. Below it out of view is the power supply for the 520. The open spaces will have a couple Teac PB-64 RCA patchbays that still need some cleaning up. Over in the other rack what I believe you are questioning as line mixers are a pair of PE-40 4-channel 4-band fully-parametric equalizers...so that's 8 channels. Each channel also has two HPF's and one LPF as well. Maybe a bit superfluous now with the M-520...We'll see.

There's gear down below on right hand rack as well...digital I/O and pre's but among them dwells an MX-80 8-channel pre from Tascam as well...truly superfluous now except that the right hand rack is designed as a self-contained 24-channel portable digital recording rig. Throw in a laptop and away you go. The MX-80 is part of the preamp lineup for that.

Now with the Tascam M-___ joining the herd in a week and a half, I'm really going to need to make some decisions here at some point and thin. :o

Sweetbeats,
Thanks for the info. I never knew Tascam had made any spring reverbs :) So those are parametric eq's in the other rack...Cool. You never know when you might need a little extra eq on something but I'm sure you'll find the eq on the 520 very sweet. I loved my old 512, it was the perfect 8 track console :)
My MS16 is running fine, thanks for asking. I have a few ongoing projects in progress which have kept me busy at the studio lately so I have not been cruising home/recording much. Best Regards, Dave

Nice DESK MAN,

It is really impressive to see what you have done with that board. I recently just won a M-520 off ebay for 202.50!!!!!!I have yet to pick it up...(this weekend), and I have some questions to ask the Tascam master haha. First what did you use to clean those faceplates off? They look great. Second, what do you think of those teac 64 point RCA patchbays. I am trying to come up with an approach to setting up patching for my board.

Good luck with anything else you decide to do on that beast.

Thanks

Brian L, congrats on your acquisition! I saw that board go for $202.50...good deal!

Watch this thread over time too. There will surely be some useful info in it especially since evm1024 picked up an M-520 and is quite knowledgeable...

The PB-64's are a good cost-effective solution for patching and access, but I'm actually a little disappointed...the jacks are rivet-mounted to the face (the shell of the jack is expanded rivet-style to the face-plate), and the face plate is plastic. Granted, it is a relatively thick rigid piece of plastic, and firmly held in place around the entire circumference, but still...the jacks themselves are standard quality, and the internal interconnect cable is good quality...good factory solder-joints. Its well put together, but if you want nut-mounted RCA's on a metal face-plate the PB-64 ain't it. You get what you pay for. I'll see how they work out. If you pick one up you aren't out much for trying. I haven't put mine into production yet so I can't really comment on their longevity and durability.

Faceplates...I cleaned all the dress panels in two steps...first I used glass cleaner applied liberally and then wiped off with a terry towel, and then I'd do that again with a clean cloth (as that terry towel, depending on how dirty your panels are, gets pretty yucky). Step two was to wax them. You can use a carnuba paste wax or whatever. I went with "whatever" and grabbed a bottle of Finish 2000 off my shop shelf which worked great. Just make sure you test whatever you get on an obscure spot to make sure it doesn't haze the paint or effect the silkscreen. Like with any rub-on finish, you rub it in, let it dry, and then buff it off with a clean lint-free cloth, turning frequently.

So Brian Your the one that beat me out of that mixer.:(
Do you live in Normal or Bloomington?

My $0.02 worth. Re: spring reverbs, the PAIA hot springs kit (uses two springs that you have to hack a little bit) sounds really good. They used to sell you just the pc board, and I used my own springs. You now have to buy the whole kit (101.45)

Yea I know. Thanks Dave for the heads up. I tried to steal it for 150.00.
In a way I wanted it bad but in another I didnt want any more big stuff.
I have cut my collection down to just 6 recorders and 3 mixers.
But I wont go any futher than that. :D
Now I need to find some dudes around here to Jam with once in awhile.

Sorry for beating you out on that board man! I live in chicago and am driving down to pick it up this weekend. I hope all is well with it.

Got the cover from Le Cover

Thumbs up to Beck's recommendation on the cover from Le Cover...Got it a couple days ago and got it out of the package yesterday.

Heavier-duty than I expected, edges are nicely seamed...$27 including S&H and it fits like a glove.

I highly recommend their products of you need a cover. They have lots of models in their lineup, and can custom size covers as well.

Wow, cool cover. Indeed a bargain for what you're getting. Have to get one. :)

That cover looks great. I will have to look into getting one for mine. I just picked my new M-520 this weeknd, and yes it works!, and yes it is in good shape. I have had the chance to test a few things, I have tested a couple channels and they work jsut fine, the busses all work, the aux works, the whole shebang. The board is all together in great shape for the walloping price of 202 dollars! The pots and faders need some exercise because they are really noisy. If anyone wants to see I will surely post some pictures!

I am very excited to have gotten such a deal, Now Ill have to save for a 85-16 deck to connect!
