Hi all

Some info for anyone interested.
I'm 'rebuilding' a 38 at the mo.
Both reel motors have been out for a thorough clean and have been fitted with new bearings.
I chose SKF High Effeinency bearings, SKF claim a 30% reduction in drag. Can't be bad!
Size of bearing 608 2ZZ

Good info!

When I bought my 38 back in the mid 90's, it had a weak supply side reel motor and at the time discussed the options with the repair center and they suggested replacing it as the cost of the motor back then from TEAC parts was $105 and changing the bearings along with the shop's bench time would have been $150. I doubt the motors are still available at this point though so good stuff knowing there's still bearing assemblies out there for it.

Cheers! :)

Hi

Cheers. The bearings are of the shelf at £3.50 each. A local engineering shop swopped out all 4 for £20. We CAN avoid being ripped off!

Good stuff!

Most of the service shops here in Canada are rip off artists. :(

Cheers! :)

Being standard industrial roller bearings they're cheap and readily available. Very commonly found in reel to reel machines, especially in motors, pinch rollers and roller guides.
I've never bought such a part from the tape machine manufacturer. Too expensive, if available at all these days.

But was there anything wrong with the existing reel motors or bearings. Disassembling the reel motors and replacing the bearings is about the last thing I would be doing on a such a machine unless I was blueprinting it. Too many other usual suspects to tackle ahead of that such as belt, heads, guides, pinch roller, mechanical adjustments, cleaning and lubing, pot and switch cleaning, electronic alignment, or have you already done that work?

Hi

I'd already done the tape path, changed the belt, new pinch wheel and general mechanical work. The bearings were noisy and it's not a difficult procedure to get the motors out. When I got the deck the supply motor was running in the wrong direction!!! There were other issues but the deck was complete and the heads are almost as new.
