Well, it might be a great beginner guitar, but it's not a solid top instrument.

Look, this "solid top" thing isn't gear snobbery, it's just a reality check. Laminated top instruments have a lot of advantages over solid top guitars, especially in the price and durability departments. The can be very nice guitars and have a legitimate place in the market. Without them, lots of us would never have gotten started. One of my favorite guitars was a laminated top S. Yairi dreadnaught.

But they really cannot compete in the tone department, and you will not find a solid woods built instrument in the same price range as entry level laminated instruments. The closest you're likely to come is the Seagull, which may be the best bang for the buck out there.

It's just a case of recognizing different market ranges, that's all. If I really need solid, true Brazilian rosewood on my fancy dreadnaught, then OK, I should be prepared to spend about eight thousand bucks for it.

The Yamaha looks like an appropriate beginner instrument for someone who might or might not be interested in guitar. Once you are on the path, however, you outgrow it. Here's a very good mail order outfit who handles the instrument. See what they have to say, and then poke around to see what else they offer....
