Ah... indeed it is not. I assumed that that was an old post already without really thinking much about it.

My bad. Thanks for helping out hosting stuff, this contest should be a lot of fun.

Listening to the rough mix another guy posted now, sounds like this is going to be a pretty fun song to mess around with.

Man, Finster, your band kicks ass man. Was the last song your band, too? Well, here is my first rough mix, critique it like crazy, please? http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=4138&alid=1126

You, Burn. Sounds like its getting to be a pretty solid mix, but IMO its a bit muddy, and the mids are a bit scooped. Also, you need to focus a bit more on the bass drum and the snare. This is metal afterall :D .

Oh, Finster, by chance could I hear what the finished product was for this song?

My upload is only 256k, so 500+MB's is taking awhile. Should be up now!

ya, it's a bit thick down low and could use some air. The bass and guitars together have a really cool creepy overcompressed effect going on, sort of early Rush, that really smokes, but the combined bottom end is eating the mix.

Would it be out of the question to ask how a good way to rid it of the muddiness is?

Try to make sure that anything that doesn't need a whole lot of low end stuff doesn't have it, so things dont compete for space. Try using a high-pass filter / eq to take out anything below 50-100hz on basically everything but kick drum, bass, and possibly toms... some things you can even get away with cutting from an even higher frequency.

Basically the kick/bass/toms are the only things that should be down there. It's a bit of a trick to make sure everything competes for frequency as little as possible, of course, or mixing would be a whole lot easier to do well.

But when everything is sort of pieced together by using different frequency ranges, placements in the stereo image, dynamic range, level, etc... it can really fall together nicely

Tell me whats up.

Kind of strange, but right click on that link and "Save target as". Only way it will work......for me anyway

Cool song...
Nice tracking... Looking forward to this one...
I'm just getting started on it...
(Got a friend with high speed to DL for me this time.)

Good to be back after missing oput on PMC#3. I've NEVER mixed this type of music before so this one is a whole new ball game to me. (thought pmc#4 was gonna be pop&rock? lol)

Anyway....it's good to be back. This one is now a work in progress!

you're not supposed to deep link into nowhere, just post a link to your download page.

Okay... well, here's a really basic mix...
Just wondering if I'm headed in the right direction at all.
I've never mixed anything like this either so bear with me...

This isn't my entry just wanting an idea.

"Mix Contest 4 Test MIx"

I don't know if I've mentioned on here at all...
But I'm not so much a fan of the scooped-mids guitar sounds nowadays,
so my mixes will likely always be a lot more "mid-dy" than others... haha.
