this is true think of bands like linkin park and slipknot!!! if there was a 5 instrument rule then bands like these would be fucked.

Dont shoot the messenger...the 4 or 5 "element" concept does work in regards to uncluttering a mix...Not saying anyone has to do that when mixing however I have adopted this concept and it works.

Element doesnt mean instrument...you could have 100 instruments in song however they cant all be playing at once...4 or 5 elements at once makes for a cleaner sounding mix...After experimenting with this mixing practice I would have to agree with it...All I can say is try it for yourself first then make an opinion on it.

I've tried the minimalist approach but I like double and triple tracking guitars too much to even remotely consider it.

I hear ya.

If I double a guitar track and play it the same yet just want to beef it up I would still consider that as one element (if the guitar tracks were the same)...so you could record the same guitar part as much as you want to beef it up.

Adding a different guitar part aside from main rhythm would be considered another element because your adding something new to the mix.
