Any entries will be posted by 2pm EST today. Thanks for everyones patience with me.

Until then MY server will be down for a maintenance upgrade

Would be nice if it was for a G5 upgrade instead. LOL

Hi-hats?

I've downloaded the files but haven't started to mix yet. Is there an individual high hat track?

I'm really not quite sure what the heck to do with those loud open-hat hits right at the end of the song on the left overhead track. They just jump right out from the middle of nowhere and take over the sound...

same thing you do at the beginning, lol...either appreciate the artists' vision, or envelope them the hell down...I opted for the latter. :D

If you EQ the overheads and get the levels sitting just right on the overheads, the cymbals have a nice air to them and the high hats cut through nicely without being overpowering. Come on people, get it together. LOL :D

Can we get some info on what was used during tracking? I am curious about a couple issues with a few tracks.

NWSM

NW some times that info is unavailabe and you have to "USE YOUR EARS"

Was the name of the song/band already mentioned?

Maybe some smooth jazz or slick radio pop music would be nice for contest number 5... or anything without primal screams.. :D

no wonder I always come in next to last. My solution was to take a chunk out of the high end, then add 20:1 compression with a reaosnably high threshhold, on top of mixing the whole track kind of low.

Here's mine...I don't mix material like this...ever...and I'm afraid it shows.

For reference, I used a cute little American classic from Pantera called "Fucking Hostile." Pantera kicked my ass, lol.

Gotta' say, the performances on this thing are just dead on. Maybe 2 drum clams, but I did such a shitty job of mixing the drums that they're hidden now, lol.

I'm calling this my final, because if I don't, I'll never stop screwing with it.

Thanks to xfin for the tracks. Oh, and everybody needs to take the following pledge:

"I solemnly swear that, no matter where I end up in the judging, I will not be a jackass and argue about it. I will politely thank the judges and understand that there are many subjective aspects to any such endeavor, and it takes all different types to make the world go around."

Well, I am an idiot. I downloaded the zip files at work, and then totally f*&%@ng forgot to burn them onto a CDR to bring home. Duh. Three-day weekend, too! I guess I'll try my pathetic little dial-up. But, Dammit!

I did remember to stop by the 9:30 to get my ticket for The Cramps, though. So not a total loss. :D

COOKIES! FRESHLY BAKED COOKIES!!! YES!!!

Maybe tomorrow I can find a cookie sheet that will hole more than 6 cookies....

What kind of placement do you guys use when mic'ing cookies in stereo? I tried an XY, but it completely canceled out or something, cuz I couldn't hear a thing through the phones.

Tip for others: If you cool them in the freezer, they will cool off a lot faster than you might think, so stay on it!

I use ORTF... I like a wide cookie image... makes a 2-inch cookie seem like 3 feet! :p

I'll tell you the thing I had the hardest time with. After the first part of the intro, where there's a break, when the mix comes back in, it loses about 3db in apparent volume...that was tricky, lol. Oh, my 14 year old daughter asked me if I borrowed her System of A Down CD when I played it in the car...she likes it, lol.

Here is "Spawn of the Nemesis" (which is my working title for this track).

I don't normally listen to this style of music. :-)

Here's my "interpretation" in any case.

An interesting exercise. Thanks to those who contributed the original tracks, and to the judges.
