"I solemnly swear that, no matter where I end up in the judging, I will not be a jackass and argue about it. I will politely thank the judges and understand that there are many subjective aspects to any such endeavor, and it takes all different types to make the world go around."

Will the winner be allowed to gloat shamelessly?

You went a little autotune heavy, eh? Heh.

I like! That loud hi-hat is annoying. Heh.

The LF "congestion" of the bass and drums is quite easily solved. Just swap the drummer's right foot and the bass player's right hand.

There is no sensible way to blend a double-beater kick into a mix with a thrashing bassline. I wish they'd have only relied on one or the other for energy. There seems to be little discrimination about "space" in the playing.

I did find that a Pentium 3 with 256KB RAM doesn't have enough grunt to mixdown these tracks without buffering and latency problems. Long tracks + slow CPU = considerable difficulties.

I'm going to take the mix down to a Retirement Home for a second opinion.

Haha, retirement home. Ew, bad note.... I'm listening to some oldschool rufio, and something's either very tonally funky or out of key.... Ah, these were the days, when musical skill was how fast you could play a punk beat. I tried to emulate this once, and it came out more like hardcore country.... I never was much of a punk musician back then... of course now I could crank out a pop punk album in about 45 minutes... Still sounds like baby music to mem, though, IMO.

Ok, here's my final mix. I did this one in just a few hours, I find that if I take too long my mix suffers in the end.
Cool song btw!

Hey finster, when this is over with, can i remix "Opticollide" just for kicks? very nice groove but there are some things i think could make it kick more ass (and it kicks ass right now, the ending of that clip is crazy). Let me know, you may want to wait till the end of this to see if I am worthy of it LOL.

And, again for fear of sounding like an absent minded dick, is there somewhere I can upload my final mix? I have no ftp at my disposal right now and the nowhere radio/soundclick crap just doesnt want to work for me.

Hmm, Trying to find something with a sound I'd like to reference to keep my ears from adjusting too quickly to unbalancedness...

Hehe, at first I was thinking it'd be fun to use a song from a band called Curl Up And Die, but I listened, and the recordings aren't all that greatly mixed IMO. They're great though, it's like extremely musically complex noise. Fun stuff to play loudly.

Fired up an Atreyu mp3, but the quality was kinda bad... got some cool sounding mudvayne going here.... other stuff I Saw browsing my collection was At The Drive-In and Jack Johnson.... I should try using Jack Johnson as a reference, see how it comes out hehe.

edit: If I could make this mix sound like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, I'd be one happy mixerator. =)

A lot of the mixes I'm hearing so far sound pretty good (and probably are way better than mine), but I"m really hearing a lot of big ass bottom end, in some cases really tight, but still dark.

Maybe it's my monitoring chain.

Finster, just out of curiousity, what was your mic setup for drums? and were the guitars Amplitude?

T-Racks is a piece of software from IK Multimedia... got the usual eq/compressor/limiter controls and stuff. I have a pretty good time using it. I usually just use presets and tweak them a little bit - that's why we pay people like massive master to do it for us, cuz they actually have the rare all-tube experience device.

edit: forgot the word mastering... "masteriung software" is what I meant to say.

Giles - not my final mix.

I swear, I pick up about 3db of bass going from my mixdown to touching up the final stereo track and mp3 conversion, and after all that yacking about the bottom end, oh well, the bass line rocks so who cares :).

Mixed on headphones (one of the reasons why it's not my final mix).

mc4

I dig this tune, wish the words were easier to hear. I get a "...stabbed in the back, you f#$king lied..." type feel from what I can make out.

cool, checking it out, tx.

Producerkid,

Your results are incredible. Can you reveal the processing you used on guitar?

Ummm this is really fucking gay to say the least, LOL. I think what happened is that I created another account with a different email and username but i used my same address and personal info so they banned this account too, because my other account was banned.........oh well. Heres a link that I guarantee will work.

lumbago, Steinberg Nuendo is my main recording/mixing software. I used an overdrive/speaker simulator plugin on the guitars with a small low-mid cut and a smidge of reverb and chorus. Heres the signal chain:
