I recently brought a Vintage SG copy in that red colour they all seem to be. Well i already have red SG and wanted to change the colour.

So i sanded down the body and found that the wood underneath the paint was actually really nice for such a cheap guitar (£85 2nd hand) and decided to leave it natural.

My problem is that when i sanded it i rubbed it down with a damp cloth and it looked awesome but when it dried it left a white resisue on the surface and i cant seem to get it to go away.

Anyone and experience with this kind of thing?

Thanks in advance

Well if you rubbed it down with a damp cloth and it looked good, it will look good with a clear coat.
Go to www.reranch.com and check out their website.

They tell you everything you need to know about prepping and refinishing guitars.

You can order nitro laquar in aresol spray cans from them too....this is a very high quality product. I refinished a guitar with their products and it looks like a pro did it (and im not a pro, by any stretch of the imagination)
good luck

A lot of guys who put together Carvin Bolt Kits apply a tung oil finish, which is very durable (when this came up on their bbs there were tales of front doors exposed to the sun and coffee tables finished in tung oil so if you do your guitar that way you can leave it outside or use it for a coaster), can be applied over stain (if you want a blue or green SG) and super simple to apply.

Here's Carvin's finishing instructions. If you go to their bbs and post a request for people to post pix of home applied tung oil guitars, you'll get about twenty the first day. Those guys love to talk about it.

Oh, and there's nothing smmmmoooooooooooovvvverr on a neck.
