The local dentist just...........gave me his Sony TC-366 quarter-track reel to reel, and his stash of about 40 reels of record album compilations on tape. Stuff recorded from the mid 60's to late 70's. Turns out the dentist is a pretty hip guy :D .

The deck needs a bit of work, as it has some pretty severe wow and flutter problems, and now it doesn't have enough tork to sustain 7.5 ips, but i'm gonna get it fixed here pretty soon.

Before the deck crapped out on me, I did have a chance to just sit back and listen to 3 or 4 of those tapes..............Led Zeppelin III, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and several other random artists I've never heard of before. I'm REALLY GLAD I'm getting this kind of music exposure. This has really opened my ears to the heart and soul of music, the way it was, and now what I believe the way music should be. It's art, not a sterilized strucural form.

There's my 2 cents. :D

As soon as the dentist (his name is Dr. Burton) finds his reel to reel ALBUM albums, he's gonna let me have those too. :) Can't wait.

I have the exact same sony deck as you. My dad used to use on in the 60's and 70's to record albums, and hes got a bunch of old reels with Eagles, Who, Floyd, Zep etc on them. I guess my dad was a pretty hip guy too

edit: I'm also having problems with mine....the tape will play for 20 min but then the reels slow to a stop. Also the play button doesn't stay put. I have to press play before powering on to have it stay

That's EXACTLY what mine's doing now. When I first started playing stuff on it, (of course, after I had cleaned the heads and demagged the thing,) It took it about a minute to reach full speed once it started playing. It worked ok for a while, until I played Zeppelin III on it, and it slowed to a stop. (sounded kinda funny.) Wasn't because of any sticky shed or anything, just something wrong w/ the deck. Probly needs new belts, and may need some tweaking with the motor circuitry, or something. There's a guy in town who services these things, so I'll give him some business.

OK, once again syntax is not my friend............I've known, and listened to the Zep, and Bob Dylan, and McCartney for a long time. There were several other artists that I listened to who I cannot think of their names off the top of my head............one was called the Flying Burrito Brothers  .....................that I listened to.

I ain't no hermit. :) I just wasn't exactly ALIVE in that time period, or anything, so I'm playing catchup.

I feel modestly fortunate to have been able to experience the time frame that held most of the best shit that may have ever been recorded. On the other hand, I’ve heard it all a million times by now. It’s good to see that younger generations can appreciate it for what it was, or is. There’s really so much of past recordings out there, I doubt if a lifetime is long enough to hear it all.

Not sure yet. My guess would be that the belts need replacing. There's two counter belts, a capstan belt, and a motor belt, which makes for a kinda confuzing mechanism, and I'd imagine, a lot of room for errors in wow and flutter.

There could also be a dried up capacitor somewhere in the speed circuitry.

I'm taking it to a local guy, who works for Motorola, and in his spare time, fixes these sort of things in his garage. (in lockhart, TX) Good work before, so hopefully he can get it fixed right the first time.................I have problems doing that. usually takes me about 2 months, 5 tries, and a full replacement.

Yup, like it's been said I'd look at the belts first. You can find (if you're diligent) belts that'll be the same size from hardware/electronic shops. Hell, I found a new belt for my old 8 track player and some of my other pro audio gear (tape echoes) had almost the same "standard" belts so it's not THAT hard to find something. If you pull the belt and it's crispy then you're getting slippage of which brings down voltage/wattage which means wow/flutter. Now if the unit has been pushed too far after the belts have gone bad then you're doing more damage to the motor itself (which is harder to replace unless you can find an equivalent and retrofit it).

Good luck,
