What's going on in the intro lick? It sounds like someone saying "shhhh", followed by the flappy ticking sound in 16th note triplets. Is it delay? Tremolo? Some percussion instrument?

When Abbey Road came out we all had rotary phones and that's what it reminds me of.....

All the demos and alternate takes suggest it's John Lennon saying Shoot Me under his breath.

It's John's voice,...

but I seriously doubt he's saying 'shoot me'.

The Beatle recording sessions book says it's John saying "shoot me" while clapping his hands, which they put tape echo on.

Macle

If you want I can send anyone a copy of a version which you can clearly hear shoot me. Limit 2. And only if I can find it again in my sea of cds.

He's saying "shoot me"
The song was originaly concieved as a campaing song for Timothy Leary...I think he was running for some office in California. Maybe thats where he came up with the shoot me line...kinda like alot of people want to shoot those dirty politicians...
But anyway...its kind of ironic seeing as John Lennon was shot to death about 10-11 years later. I guess you get what you wish for...and I am a huge Beatles fan so NO I wasnt happy when he was shot...

He's saying "Shoot me", and clapping, as others have said. It's easier to make out on the demo included in Anthology 3.

It's the clapping (doesn't sound like clapping) that I was concerned about. The "Shoot Me" thing holds about as much interest as "Paul's dead"
It's the percussive triplet rhythm - what's making that sound? If it's a clap, it sounds gated or something because it's abrupt and then maybe a tape delay? Looks like Macle pegged it.

Paul will probably outlive them all. He's so squeeky clean,...

and that young wife of his,... uh,... you know.

Ringo looks pretty darn healthy, but he had a sickly childhood and a long self-destructive alcoholic period, which probably wore down his internal organs a bit. Currently, Ringo looks healthy as a horse.

John was murdered, which speaks for itself.

George went downhill rapidly within a few years.

Like I said, Paul will probably outlive them all.

No doubt, if you analyze Lennon's lyrics, they do indeed foreshadow his life and death. I've analyzed his lyrics and have given it a lot of thought. I'm convinced of that.

Alright try this...
Say the line "Shoot me"
But say the "Shoot" part about twice to three time as loud as the "me" almost mumbling the me part. And say the "shoot" part as if giving it the sound of a backwards cymbal. "sssshhhhoot" "me"....
there you go...
