A used G&L tribute L2000. Has both passive and active, gets Precision and jazz sounds, and almost stingray. Really versatile. My .02

Not a bad choice. I gigged for a year or so with one. Finally traded it for a fretless Jazz after I got my Classic '50s P.

Solid bass

I just got a SansAmp DI tech2100,I learned about it on this post.As soon as I clicked it on I realized how great it works!
I'm going straight into my DAW(Mbox mini) with it,I would imagine it would work great for any live act.
Thanks!
(ps...I'm a guitarist recording my own bass tracks,I may not be Primus but)

There're lots of basses that'll cut it OK. After having been through a variety of instruments, I've recently admitted that the simplicity of P and J basses is very effective and versatile. I would look for a used P bass made in Japan or US. I've found a couple, albeit a little goofy looking, but killer playing, Japanese Fender Foto Flame P's for around $300 each. Great tone and useful in many styles. These are from the mid 90's.

Good luck.

p.s. two of my favorite bass players were/are Elliott Smith and Jason Falkner (both primarily guitarists, but keyboardists and drummers as well)
