Audio Interface for MXL V67G

I can't always tell you what's good, but I can point out a lot of bad ones to avoid. :)

The usual ones I'd recommend in the low end are mostly FireWire products by Edirol, e.g. the FA-66, FA-101. That said, I've generally heard good things about the Phonic Helix FireWire stuff, e.g. this. No idea why Full Compass says "USB" as part of the description---that's pretty clearly the FireWire version in the picture and about 98% of the description.... *shrugs*

I don't have any good suggestions in the USB space. I'm sure there are some that are reasonable, I just don't know what.

Yeah, i was looking more for USB interface, so i can plug it direct to my comp, if i get a interface that's not "USB", how do i hook it on to my comp then? =/ I dont have a studio, it's only me , my mic, and my computer heh.

Here are some clips. The v67 and cad m179 are both run into a dmp3 into a delta 1010 in reaper. No eq, compression, and I didn't even use the bass roll off on the m179 or the dmp3. Both vocals are completely unprocessed.

Thanks, I've got an idea now. It's not muuch of a difference, but the CADM179 is better apparently. I appreciate it

Assuming it's a typical desktop computer, a TI-based FireWire card will cost you about $18. Do not buy one that is a USB/FireWire combo card. The mere presence of a USB interface sharing the IRQ will seriously screw things up. The USB drivers in Windows are really abusive. :)

If it's a laptop, does it have a CardBus or ExpressCard slot?

it's a PC. So i guess im going to buy a FireWire card off the Net then. Locals are such rips..

would a "FireWire IEEE 1394 4 Pin 6 Pin 4 Ports PCI Card" be just fine?

That's a pretty weird description.... You want to be pretty careful about buying a FireWire card. Not all chipsets are created equal. TI is safe; NEC is so-so, Lucent is fine for most devices (but not all), then they go rapidly downhill from there, with some of the cheaper chipsets not even being OHCI compliant.... :)

Try this:

ah Snap, that's a real good price too.. too bad im canadian and can't buy from that site..

No real opinion. Their FireWire and PCI gear always seemed a little cranky to me, at least on the Mac platform, but USB on a PC... anybody's guess.

Still trying to calculate whether USB 1.1 ports really provide enough current for two 48V phantom power supplies. My math before was wrong by two orders of magnitude. Not sure how.

Okay, so about 200 mA of the 500 mA maximum would get eaten by the phantom power. That puts it within the realm of possibility. Not sure why M-Audio's previous USB devices screwed things up and underpowered their phantom supplies, then. It's not anything fundamental to the design of USB.... Unless the rest of their circuitry draws 300+ mA. Okay, they're probably approaching the maximum....

hmm so what do u suggest?

Hey,
Okay I think I've come to a conclusion, dgat please tell me if it's good.

Microphone : AT4040
Interface: Presonus Firebox

Is the interface good enough for the mic? I still good have another idea of an interface if someone tells me, but for now, that's the choice im making until someone with knowledge tells me otherwise. Good?

I really dislike the FireBox. Its pres are frequently criticized for having insufficient gain, and it violates FireWire's power specifications so it requires an external power supply to work with some machines even if they provide bus power. It seems like a colossal hack job to me....

If you're considering something in that price range, I'd steer you towards the Edirol FA-66 or FA-101.

Thanks, i'll trust your words dgat.

I find it funny how I went from budgetting a 67G & mobile Pre,
to getting an AT4040 & edirol fa-66 (i choose this one)

Thanks again.
