Most economical way to achieve THIS sound.

Hello! *COMPLETE BEGINNER WARNING*

I come from the world of livestreaming (Twitch) and I'm looking to massively up the quality of my microphone setup as I'm currently using a Blue Snowball (which doesn't handle shouting well at all). My stream is 100% talking (and yes, sometimes shouting ).

After stumbling across this video, I'm in love with his sound. I want to sink the money into his full setup but it's EXTREMELY expensive.

He's using
* AT4040
* Steinberg-UR28M

However, he mentions in the video that this is massive overkill to achieve his sound. I'd love to achieve the same sound he has, and want to know how I can do it the cheapest. I was looking at the AT2035 w/ Behringer 802 XENYX Mic Preamps and British EQs, but I'm a complete beginner.

What do you guys think?

All you need is a decent audio interface and a condenser mic like the SE2200a. It's really good for the price. For your use, I'd go for a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as the audio interface. It has preamps in it and phantom power.

You do not need a mixer or a good preamp, especially since this goes to Youtube where the sound quality is drastically reduced (compressed) anyway.

A pop filter would be a good idea too. They're pretty cheap.

Also he uses a lot of compression and probably a limiter. I think that might be the "quality" you're hearing.

You get those for free as plugins. So if you haven't tried that first, then.. do that and see if you really need better gear. Because, again, if it's for streaming, you won't really get good sound quality anyway

He'd sound SOOOO much better on a 7b or RE20... But yes - There's plenty of compression going on there.

A 58 with a pop screen on a decent "channel-strip" type preamp will get you AT LEAST as good of a sound (assuming you know what you're doing with it and have an inherently decent voice of course).

Thanks for your help guys, but many of the mics you've suggested are MORE expensive and I'm looking to do this as cheap as possible (and maintaining as much quality as possible).

Add on a pop filter and mic stand and that interface and mic could be usable. Some of how you sound will depend on your speaking distance to the mic and if the room is treated or not (echoey room)

Another to take a look at might be the AKG P220 | Sweetwater.com if it's in your budget.


You could later on when budget allows add a channel strip as suggested to further fine tune things. The one below is used at a fair price...
