Somewhere in Space
I received a box of 10 NOS Sony Super 150 type S-7/550m 25 (1.0) micron polyester tapes from a friend.
I have never heard of this tape before.
Can anyone tell me a little about it?

Is it worth biasing one of my mixdown decks for it?
It doesn't seem sticky as I tried it on a deck that isn't set up at the moment.
Ran it for a bit,..no sss at all.

I found a manual for a Sony TC-series deck, which has bias/EQ presets. Apparently it's compatible with Scotch 150 and TDK 150.

About the Scotch 150, I found this: "Scotch 150 is 1 mil tape from the acetate days. No sticky shed and low bias requirements. Do be careful about winding. Not the best tape to record on but OK with older recorders. Most old pre-recorded tapes up to about 1963 used this tape. Double play tape."

...so 150 is Sony's copy of an early tape formulation intended for consumer decks. It would probably work nice on an old deck, if you're trying for the sound of that era it might be worth a go, but it's probably not going to compare well against 456 or SM911 on a modern deck if that's what you're trying to do.

Funny you say that,..cuz that's the type of deck I tried it out on! A Sony TC-366!

I kinda had a feeling it was for consumer decks.
Thanks for confirmation JP!!:thumbs up:
I googled this tape and couldn't find anything on it.
